Summary
"I have Ms. Kelly today," Max says, almost bitterly. "You'll be okay at lunch without me?" she says it sarcastically, like a joke, but there's an undercurrent of something else in her voice; for a moment, she almost sounds scared.
Will releases her hand, even as they walk out of the gym doors together. "Works out for me," he tells her, "I have that project for art I have to finish up anyways." He pauses, hesitates. "Will you be okay without me?"
Max takes a breath, and then gives him a shaky smile, one that doesn't quite reach her eyes. "I'll have your tape," she says, wiggling the wires of her headphones. "See you after school."
~~
or: a shared tragedy brings max and will together for their first year of high school in hawkins. they stay together, even as their demons rise again. a s4 rewrite, in which joyce is the one who dies at the end of s3 and thus the byers + el never move.

Summary
For a long moment, it's quiet. Dustin's chest is heaving with the force of his words, and Will is… standing there, looking shell-shocked, with that barely disguised look of hurt that Dustin once swore he would never, ever inflict upon him.
"...so you think this is my fault?" When Will does speak, it's quiet, the words barely a whisper. Dustin's heart aches at the sound, but not enough to tamper the seeds of anger still sprouting in his chest.
"Think?" Dustin laughs mirthlessly. "Isn't it obvious? Somehow, for some reason, you're the root of everything we've been through. We've all thought it, we all know it, but nobody's been heartless enough to bring it up with you because they're all too busy coddling you instead. Tough luck, Byers, spending all this time being worried about me when you could've been taking some fucking responsibility and actually helping us put a stop to what you started."
~~
or: seven months after the end of the world, dustin and will end up on a patrol that takes a turn for the worse. trapped together in the upside down, dustin is forced to confront his feelings-about eddie, about el, and about will himself. not canon compliant, theoretical s5.

Summary
Will takes a step sideways, into the walkway leading to the front counter between tables, blocking his sister from Mike's view. "Mike?" he questions, trying for an easy, casual smile; he has no idea what his expression actually reflects. "What are you doing here?"
Mike grins, shrugging as he walks right up to Will, a mere two feet of distance between them. "Needed a change of scenery," he says, equally casual. "Nancy reminded me that you guys live in Montauk now, and I realized I never really visited. Didn't expect to run into you so fast though; is this place… yours?"
And isn't that a loaded question. Will forces a smile on his face, tries to ignore the elephant in the room standing behind him. "Something like that," he says.
~~
or: ten years after graduation, will is living in montauk sharing a pottery shop with el living his best life; at least, he is until mike comes crashing right back into it with a newfound confidence, unaware of el's presence. a romcom

Summary
"Will," he breathes, and it comes off panicked and pitchy, because Jonathan has never been more terrified in his entire life. "Oh, fuck, Will–"
"Jonathan," Will mumbles, and he's taking smaller breaths, shaky and uneven. "I…"
"Shh, don't speak," Jonathan urges. He wraps his overshirt around Will's stomach, tying it so tight that Will makes a strangled whine, his fists clenching. "You're–you're gonna be fine, okay? We're gonna get you to a hospital and, and call Mom, and everything's going to be fine."
~~
or: in the chaos of the shootout at their home, will gets shot. somehow, jonathan has to keep moving anyways-for mike's sake, if not his own.

Summary
"And now I'm making a fool of myself in front of literally the most important person in the entire kingdom," the girl laughs again, that same nervous chuckle that comes choked out of her. "I'm Robin. Robin Buckley, at your service."
"And it's a pleasure to meet you," Nancy nods, still stiff, still polite. "You… didn't have to come speak with me."
Robin tilts her head. "I wanted to," she says simply. "Like I said, I haven't really been to many of these. Royal balls, I mean."
"You're not missing much," Nancy says dryly, and Robin laughs, a genuine laugh, not one of the nervous chuckles from before. "I'm Nancy. But… you already knew that."
~~
or: princess nancy knows what is expected of her. she finds solace in the strange violinist at her brother's coming of age ball anyways. a royal au.

Summary
It's 1997 and the ghost of Mike Wheeler walks back into Will Byers' life twice in one day: first in a Midtown coffee shop, then as the writer assigned to his graphic novel. Eight years of awkward distance now have a deadline. Collaboration is a special kind of torture when the person you're building a world with is the one who broke yours.

Summary
“I’m just so proud of you, baby.” He feels a weight lifted off his shoulders- which is ridiculous, he’s ridiculous for thinking that she would be anything but proud. Nonetheless, he feels relieved. He smiles, fiddling with his fingers again.
“It’s really nothing.” He says, “Mike keeps talking about how they’re innate but…but they’re not. They’re siphoned, from Vecna.” The mention of his name makes Joyce’s eyes go wide.
“Well, last I checked no one else can do that.” She shrugs, her eyes still wide. Will chuckles, looking at the floor, “Hey, all I’m saying is that I think you need to have a little more trust in yourself.” She leans forward, putting a hand on his cheek. He leans into it, into the warmth of her hand, “You didn’t fail, okay?” She says, and he nods, even though he doesn’t really believe it, “You saved Mike- all your friends. You did that, baby.” She shakes her head, “Not Vecna, just you.”
Will can feel himself tearing up for about the millionth time that night, “I can make it right.” He settles on, “We just need a new plan, a better plan.”
Right, a better plan. Easier said than done.

Summary
"I just need you to know," Will says quietly, and he makes himself hold Mike's gaze, "that if something happens - if I hurt you, or anyone else - it's not because I wanted to. I would never want to hurt you, Mike. Never."
The words hang between them, loaded with more meaning than Will intended.
There's a pause where all Will can hear is their breathing echoing against the storage closet's walls. The hum is more distant now, buzzing in the back of Will's mind, but the uneven inhales coming from in front of him sound louder. The breath tickling his nose (because they really are that close) feels realer.
Mike's eyes are still darting across Will's face, and Will can feel him inhale sharply. "Will, why are you so convinced you're going to hurt someone? What did Vecna show you?"
Everything, Will thinks. He showed me everything. Showed me killing you over and over until I couldn't see anything else.
Somewhere between slaying interdimensional eldritch horrors, exploding an entire dimension, and risking their lives countless times, Mike and Will find each other.

Summary
Will Byers disappears the night he’s supposed to come home.
They never find his body. They never stop looking, until they do.
Five years later, Mike Wheeler has learned how to swallow his grief. He dates the girl everyone expects him to. He grows up the way he’s supposed to. He tells himself that missing someone is not the same thing as loving them. He tells himself that losing Will didn’t change him.
Somewhere beyond the edges of their world, Will Byers survives. His memories are the first thing to go. His voice follows. His body learns new rules; how to run, how to fight, how to survive. He forgets what it means to be a person, but he never quite forgets what it means to belong to something. Or someone.
When Will finally returns, he doesn’t remember himself.
And as something old and hungry begins to follow him back into Hawkins, Mike is forced to confront the truth he’s spent five years avoiding.
A story about becoming someone new, about loving someone you no longer recognize, and about learning who you have been all along.
