Or maybe there was. But when Yuji attempted to think about it, he had reached the final canvas.

Larger than the rest, completely absent of the creature, yet its presence was felt more than ever in the monochrome spiral that took its place. In its center was nothing. A void from which no light could escape. The lack of eyes did not stop Yuji from feeling as though his very soul was being judged, sending a jolt up his spine. His fingers released the other paintings, leaving the stack to fall back onto themselves as he crawled away.
