Summary
“Don’t you think it looks neater, though?” Eddie asks, just for the reaction.
“No, Eddie,” Buck breathes. “No. I don’t. I think it’s touching the wall, which I think is gross and uncouth.”
Eddie bites down on a smile. “It’s uncouth?”
Or, Buck has strong feelings about toilet paper. Eddie has strong feelings about Buck.

Summary
“Do none of you care about the children? It’s a bachelor auction, and you, my friend, are a bachelor. Abracadabra, put your name on the list.”
“I can’t,” Eddie repeats. He can’t. He cannot. “I’m not.”
“You’re not? Since when?” Chimney frowns. “Who?”
It’s not Eddie’s fault that, at that exact moment, Buck walks in. So it’s not his fault that he opens his mouth and says, “Buck.”
Or, Eddie trips and falls into a lightly fraudulent HR-disclosed "consensual romantic relationship" with his best friend. Really, if you think about it, it's a win-win.

Summary
It was perfect.
The plan was simple.
Buck would come over.
At some point, Buck would stand under the mistletoe.
Eddie would make some kind of joke. Something casual. Easy. A little teasing.
Buck would laugh, maybe duck his head in that shy way he got when Eddie hit the exact right note of earnest and flirtation.
Then Eddie would kiss him.
Or 5 times Eddie tried to kiss Buck under the mistletoe and 1 time he put it away

Summary
"The question was simple. The answer wasn’t. And he didn’t know if it would be for a long time. Longer than he wanted to think about. Because if he was honest? No. Buck wasn’t okay. Neither was he. But explaining that? To Maddie of all people. That was an impossible task..."
Or, in the aftermath of what happened in New Mexico, Eddie thinks about his life, talks to Maddie, and makes some important decisions... particularly about his best friend.

Summary
“Hey, are you okay?” Eddie asks sharply, and it’s only then that Buck realizes he’s shaking, all of the adrenaline he’d managed to sustain throughout the entire hostage crisis draining out of him in a rush, leaving him weak and cold.
“I’m —” fine, Buck tries to say, but it gets stuck behind the lump in his throat that he can suddenly barely get air past, let alone words. A door slams somewhere behind them and Buck flinches, gunshots echoing through his mind and copper flooding his tongue as the reality of what just transpired crashes over him.
It almost happened again, he thinks wildly. It almost happened again.

Summary
“I’m sorry, I don’t know how,” Bonnie says, clicking the safety off and raising the gun.
Buck closes his eyes, his heart pounding desperately in his chest, one hot tear rolling down his cheek. At least I’ll get to see Bobby again. He tries to focus on that instead of how he won’t ever see Maddie, Chim, his niece and nephew, Christopher, Ed—
The door bursts back open. “Hey! Someone’s comin’!” Earl says, pulling it shut behind him.

Summary
“So, if he’s not your boyfriend, does that mean he’s single?”
Eddie’s stomach churns at the question.
“Um, well—”
Tom cuts him off.
“Do you think he’d say yes if I asked him out?”
Eddie doesn't know why he does it. He just knows that the idea of this man, Tom, wanting to ask Buck out makes him feel like he's going to throw up, so before he can even think about it, he blurts out—
“Oh, sorry, man, I just meant that he’s my husband, not my boyfriend.”
or; When Buck and Eddie are in Nashville for the firefighter competition, Eddie accidentally tells one of the other firefighters that he and Buck are married. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

Summary
He feels unhinged. He feels like all his bones are unspooling into piles of spaghetti that someone then tazed. Oh god-
"Does Eddie know he's gay?!!"
"You don't even know he's gay," Hen says calmly. "Not for sure. You can't assume these things unless you talk to him, Buck."
"That's why he doesn't want to date!" Buck plows on, Hen's words already buried under ten million gay possibilities. "Why he hasn't looked at a woman in over a year. Why he was always so bad at dating despite being the hottest person to walk this earth."
"Okay, I think we're getting a bit carried away here."
"Hen, he keeps wearing my clothes."
“He- what?"
OR
Buck is determined to give Eddie a fun, relaxing trip to Nashville for the firefighter games and can be so totally normal about his best friend wearing his clothes and letting his guard down and also maybe possible being gay.

Summary
“What does that feel like?” Eddie asks quietly.
Buck lets out a thin breath. “Like everything’s happening at a distance.”
Eddie doesn’t interrupt.
Buck stares at the blanket in his lap. “Like I know I’m here. I know this is me. I know I’m in this room with you.” He swallows. “But it’s like… there should be more of me in here than there is.”
Jesus.
Eddie looks down at his own hands because if he keeps staring at Buck’s face, he might get up and cross the room and do something neither of them is ready for.

Summary
The morning before Buck and Eddie get home from Nashville.
-----
God, Buck still can’t believe Eddie hotwired a car to find him. Can’t believe he rode a horse. Can’t believe he snuck out of a hospital room through a window after stealing another man’s clothes.
Can’t believe Eddie hasn’t once denied it or suggested a correction when someone mistakes him for Buck’s husband. Boyfriend. Partner. Whatever name they come up with in their head, whatever label they choose, they say it and Eddie doesn’t deny it. Doesn’t even seem to mind it. Might even look like he enjoys having someone look at the two of them, come to a conclusion, and breathe that relationship into existence.

Summary
Buck, predictably, answers within two rings. “Yellow. You’ve got Buck.”
“Hey, Buck.”
“You okay?”
Eddie lifts his head to confirm the state of his house. The orange tree is still very much there, amidst the wreckage of his home. The sole perpetrator, even.
“Sure,” he says.
Buck hesitates. “...Sure?”
“There’s a tree.”
“Where?”
“Inside my house.”
“Oh.” Eddie can practically see Buck’s eyebrows furrowing. “Like, you bought a tree?”
“No,” Eddie says. He hasn’t blinked since Buck picked up the phone. “It’s the orange tree.”
A beat of silence. “It’s inside your house.”
Eddie lets out an exhausted huff, leaning back in his chair. “Apparently.”
OR: there’s an orange tree. It’s in Eddie’s house.

"Hey, bud, it's okay," Eddie murmurs, carefully laying his hand on Buck's shoulder and shaking lightly. "You're just dreaming."
Buck's breathing stutters but his eyes don't open. Another strangled sound of distress breaks past his lips.
"Buck," Eddie says, a little more urgently. "C'mon, I need you to wake up now."
"No, no don't," Buck mumbles, voice slurred and sleepy and unmistakably terrified. "Not Eddie. Please, I can't - don't hurt him."

Summary
Buck lets out a final sigh as his laughter fades. “Besides, it’ll be easier to finish unpacking once I’ve moved out.”
Eddie becomes immensely aware of his own heartbeat pounding in his ears; of the weight of his tongue in his mouth; of the dampness clinging to his skin from hours of exertion. The hours they spent moving Eddie’s stuff back into the house, which Eddie did not realize at the time, was apparently just his.
OR: Buck helps the Diazes move back in. Eddie didn't realize that meant helping Buck move out.

Summary
Eddie’s massage therapist is Briana.
He confirmed this six times: twice on the website, once during a phone call he made from his truck in the grocery store parking lot like it was a covert operation, three more times in the confirmation email.
"Eddie?"
He looks up.
That is not Briana.
The guy standing in the hallway entrance is tall and built like someone whose job description wildly undersold the physical reality. There's a birthmark above his eye that shouldn't work but does, way too much, and his scrubs fit him well. They — okay. They fit him obscenely well, actually.
His arms. God, his arms. They're just arms. Everyone has arms.
Eddie is suddenly, involuntarily, thinking about what it would feel like to have those arms braced on either side of him. Or around him. Or holding him down.
Which is not a thought he's ever had about a man's arms before. He's pretty sure. He's almost sure. He's going to move on from this.
He is going to stop looking at the arms.
Any second now.
Or,
It's just a massage. Eddie can survive that. Right? -

Summary
“Okay, I know we kind of all had an unspoken rule not to talk about it, but…”
“Buck and Eddie are being weird as hell?” Chim asked, sucking in a breath like he'd been holding back from letting the same thought out for far too long.
“Yes!” Hen hissed, relieved that she wasn't the only to see the weirdness in the room. “Now, look, they're my friends and so obviously I want them to be happy, but it's also just throwing the team vibe way off.”
Bobby took a long, tired breath. “Okay. So what did you have in mind?”
Several things, as it turned out. Between them, they managed to come up with the very vague outline of a plan. Or a few plans, really, depending on how many failed.
OR -
When Buck and Eddie aren't speaking, Hen decides to take matters into her own hands.

“You have to look after Dad.”
Buck frowns, eyes snapping to Eddie like he’s mortally wounded and hiding it from him.
His dad laughs uncomfortably. “Chris. I thought you wanted to call Buck?”
“I did. For you.”
Or, everyone keeps dying. Christopher needs Buck to make sure that his dad doesn't die, too.
