Will’s eyes widen and he hears Jane’s shocked gasp beside him.
Underneath the helmet, underneath all the scars and jagged lines, stares back—
“I am Michaela Childress, firstborn daughter of House Acer, Sworn Paladin to the Kingdom of Holkins, and Right Hand to the Queen Regent.” She seethes, the hard line in her jaw tightening as she glowers at Will. “The Queen Regent, whose face you have adapted as your own.”
Okay, so it’s not just him.
This woman clearly looks like Mike.
(or, the one where michaela childress is all but a lonely paladin that misses her wife so much that she risks her life, jumps into an unknown portal, and inadvertently causes distress and awakens realizations among the local populace.)

“D’you ever consider I did it on purpose? I am a bit of an attention-seeker, you know.” Perhaps Mike is drunker than Will initially thought.
“What?”
“How else could I get the chance to talk to you alone?” Will feels like the air was just knocked out of him. Of course Mike is joking, but there’s a hint of truth to the statement. He was looking for ways to get Will alone. Will isn’t sure whether this information excites him or terrifies him.
“You’re nutty,” Will says, physically shaking the worries from his head.
“Maybe so,” Mike says, “but it worked.”

Will’s eyes flicked to Lucas. His eyebrows were high up on his forehead, eyes widened, and he shifted up a little straighter, like he was intrigued. Like he knew what was coming, and was bracing for it.
“And— and it’s like… shit, it’s like— kind of awful, y’know? Um. To figure out. The thing’s not awful. Well— maybe. Probably. Possibly? You guys might think so. My dad thinks so. I kind of think so? Uh. Well. Not as much. Not anymore?” His shuddering hand gestured outwards, pointing at nothing, a wide gesticulation of no substance or meaning beyond nervous habit. Mike sucked in another harsh breath. “And it’s like… this— this massive thing. Like, life-changing. It’s kind of re-contextualised my whole life, actually. Like I’ve suddenly switched D&D classes, or something.”

Her gaze dropped to Mike’s hand on Will’s wrist. “Don’t hurt Papa!” she begged desperately.
For a split moment, Will didn’t understand, the thought so far-fetched, improbable, and ridiculous that it didn’t even cross his mind, but then the realization hit him like a bucket of cold water being dumped over his head.
She thought Mike was going to hit him.
Mike must’ve understood it at the same time, because his hand fell away, quick, like he’d been burned.

Summary

Each time Mike thinks of Will, he feels the weight of cosmic responsibility.
He's doesn't know what he feels for Will anymore. But he knows for certain that it isn't allowed.

He can feel their eyes on him, tacit understanding. They live here now because they can’t burden the Wheelers any longer than they already have, and because they can’t afford to buy a new house, and because Mom and Hopper have been together for almost two years and there’s really no logical reason not to live here. But they’re all on the same page here. It feels impossible. When he spins back to them, their faces look as hopeless as Will feels.
“How are we supposed to do this?” he pleads, the fight draining out of him.
(The Upside Down implodes and brings Jane Hopper with it. Will Byers, perennially caught between two slides, navigates the complexities of grief and healing and finds ways to grow a life that expands beyond trauma and tragedy.)
