“There were the two nights when it rained, and they all slept huddled together under the shelter of a blanket stretched between willow trees—there had been a ridiculous pleasure about waking up to find Bush snoring beside him with a protective arm across him.” (C.S. Forester, Flying Colours)

    Summary

    "The wardroom was stifling.

Even at sea, far from land and its stifled summer breath, the night refused mercy. The timbers of the Indefatigable groaned with the heat, as though the ship herself was parched and yearning for relief. There was no wind, not even the faintest whisper through the open stern windows. Only the lethargic creak of the hull and the sluggish flicker of the candle on the table broke the silence.

Archie Kennedy sat in his shirt-sleeves, boots discarded beneath the table, coat flung carelessly over the back of a chair. Across from him, Horatio Hornblower had, at last, succumbed to exhaustion."

Archie watches Horatio sleep of a too warm evening.

“I wish for your sake, if nothing else, that we might see some action – or at least some variety.”

Hornblower glances at him, surprised. “I didn’t know you took me for a fire-eater,” he says.
