Summary
This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. He’d planned it all out, hadn’t he? Practiced in front of the cracked mirror in his new single bedroom apartment. Forced his unused voice past straining vocal cords. Again, again. Until he could seem like a passable version of his former confident, if not snarky, self.
This pathetic, shaking man clutching the cold seat of a toilet in the PTMC staff bathroom had never met that person.

Or: I put all the angst tropes in a blender, smash Langdon into a wall, and force feed him the smoothie.

Summary
Frank has watched him since he was a student in his third year, since he started his residency, since he was ardent-eyed and young and still good and followed the man like a scorned daughter follows her mother, like a dog heeds to his master, like a moth lingers near a flame despite, despite, despite. Like a devotee, he looks at Robby like he’s a god, squints so he doesn’t see that the man on his knees in front of him is terribly, awfully, frightfully human.
Frank thinks, if Robby couldn’t save me, no one could.

Summary
He heard Clark shift in the chair — that particular adjustment, weight redistributing, the prelude to something. Bruce had catalogued Clark's physical vocabulary over six years without meaning to, and he knew, from the sound of it, that Clark was about to say something he considered important.
"I want you to be my best man."
Bruce's heart did something it was not supposed to do. A single, traitorous beat off the rhythm — brief, a flicker, the kind of weakness he had not permitted himself in years. He was aware, with the cold certainty of a man who had made a study of Clark Kent's capabilities, that Clark had heard it.
He set the tablet down.

He was just about to enter his passcode when he heard footsteps. He waited, hand on the locker door. Jack came to stand right over him, then he reached down and caught his wrist, murmuring, “Come with me.”
