Summary
These are (mostly) unrelated ficlets that I posted on tumblr, cleaned up for archiving purposes. I may add to this once I've finished posting them. Consider this a work of amuse-bouches, if you will. Amuses-bouche?

Summary
After Bobby dies, Athena—seeking a change, and some sort of meaning in life—gets pulled onto the LAFD's Arson Investigation unit. It's been falling apart at the seams for years now. But she's given her pick of firefighters to fill it out, and she chooses the best of the best: Buck, of course, adrift and grieving; and Tommy, who's been grounded for insubordination and transferred to admin for a while.
Buck and Tommy dance around each other. Athena closes in on a serial arsonist. Things heat up from there.

No, he doesn't mind all of that. He doesn't mind anything right now. Not when he has his hands wrist deep in the dirt in the slightly-shaded side yard, feeling around for leftover roots from the tree of heaven that he'd pulled out an hour ago: cut it down with a handsaw, forgoing the poison that reddit suggested because he didn't want Jee touching it accidentally, then splitting the trunk down with a hatchet so he could remove it piece by piece. Not when he's carefully avoiding the bulbs, the irises and the daffodils, because it's the wrong time of year to disturb them. Not when nobody's looking at him so nobody can see that his eyes are leaking a little bit, because—well, it's LA; they probably need the moisture, even if it is a little salty. No, he doesn't mind at all.
Buck digs around a little. Tommy invites him to leave.

Summary
She's wiping at her face with her hands. It's futile. He pulls up outside her building, and she's already reaching for the door handle with her dripping hand. She leaves behind a shiny wet spot. He turns off the car and reaches for his door as well.
Emma stares at him as he rounds the hood of his car toward her. “I'm—”
He doesn't know what she planned to say. Just pulls her close. Use my fucking shirt, he thinks, cupping the back of her head. Christ, he's lost it. But he's already here. So he presses her face to his chest so her tears soak into cotton. He'll wash it when he gets home. They were his tears anyway. He caused them, and he always cleans up his own messes.

Summary
Jee-Yun grows up in the shadow of all the ghosts of all the people who love her. It is not a particularly easy way to grow up, no matter how much they might love her. (Mistakes may not repeat, but sometimes they rhyme.) The village of people raising her do help soften the blow a little, though.
Or: It's Jee's turn for the Buckley Generational Trauma

Summary
“You know, I never saw these,” Buck says, trying to sound light.
“You've been missing out,” Tommy says, blinking and turning a little in his seat so he's facing Buck more directly. “How—”
“I didn't know you'd be here,” Buck admits. “Is it okay?”
Tommy nods slowly, sliding his phone into his pocket. “Yeah, of course. How've you been?”
Buck winces and throws a couple of kernals of popcorn into his mouth. “Okay, I guess? Actually not. I don't know, it's—I’m fine.”
“Uh-huh,” Tommy says slowly, clearly not believing him. “Why don't you get back to me about that in a few hours?”
“Okay,” Buck says, holding the popcorn bucket toward him. “We can share.”
“Okay,” Tommy agrees, grabbing a couple pieces.

Buck decides to go to the movies and sees Tommy there.
