Charlie is patient as Nick does a double-take at his request, staggering back and knocking over a bottle of tequila. He sips his vodka lemonade and waits.
“What, er—now?!” Nick splutters.
“Why not?” He’s emboldened now. This loop is quickly becoming hell on earth, but maybe it doesn’t have to be, not all the time. There are no consequences for him in the loop. “Pity fuck?” Charlie smirks over his tea.
Nick shakes his head and digs into his own pastry. “Yes, that. You’ve been waiting all these years to meet someone who makes you feel safe and loved. And God, Charlie, you’re my best friend. Of course I want you to have that experience for your first time. So many people’s first times are utter shit. Mine was utter shit. I’d be an awful friend if I didn’t want you to have the best possible experience.”
Charlie has no idea where he’s going with this.
“So,” Nick says, a little nervous, “if you don’t want the first experience to be with me, then as your best friend, I feel it is my duty to help you find the person it will be with. If you want.”

The first time happens when he’s still a kid. His teacher sets up a penpal exchange with a French school, and Charlie gets paired up with a wonderful boy called Nick. Charlie ends up falling in love with him even though they've never met.
The second time happens years later, after Nick and Charlie have lost contact. Charlie is in uni and he desperately needs a French tutor to help him pass. A charming half-French boy called Nick volunteers, and Charlie falls in love again.
Maybe Charlie does have a thing for French guys. Half-French guys called ‘Nick,’ to be specific.
