Samira nods. John gestures again. A bit of bologna flies off and lands on the counter with a wet thwap. Samira feels like that slice of bologna. "Samira," John continues, "will be hosting this wounded war hero at her farm. The farm in Connecticut that she lives on with her husband and child."
Parker has a look of dawning horror on her face. “Samira.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have a farm.”
“I know.”
“You don’t have a husband.”
“I’m aware.”
"You definitely don't have a child."
"Correct."

Sometimes during early mornings, when Nezha is sleeping soundly next to her in her university bedroom and the sun has yet to emerge through the mountains surrounding Sinegard, in the kaleidoscopic of soft pinks and blues of the dawnlight she can feel the knife going through her heart, can still feel the all consuming rage and grief tumbling through her, spreading all over her in a sickly way only blood does, and it’s as if she’s back in Speer all over again, and the willpower to remain silent cracks in tiny little pieces all over her, reminding her of Nezha’s face scars in his old life.
And as a result — she doesn't know what else to do, doesn't know how to fix this or them, aside from brushing her hand over his broad chest, making him stir, while giving him delicate, feather life kisses along his shoulder, his neck, his mouth, because they don't talk about it.
