Violet slipped through the door just after midnight, careful to make no noise, boots left in the hallway. She paused at the threshold, glancing down at her daughter, and I could see it in her eyes—equal parts relief and guilt.
“She’s asleep,” I said softly, watching Fenna’s tiny hands curl over the blanket.
Violet nodded, crouching beside the bed. Her fingers hovered over Fenna’s hair, brushing back a stray curl without touching her face too harshly. “Oh… she really misses me,” she whispered.
“She did well, considering,” I said, taking a deep breath, “that she threw a tantrum and made me reconsider the thought if flying into battle or trying to calm an agitated toddler was more fearful.”

Or Violet’s first day back on patrol after Fenna’s birth and Xaden has to figure out how to juggle a toddler and his duties in one hand.
