Ilya leaned back slightly, still close enough that that Shane could feel her breath as she spoke, warm and wet on the side of her cheek.
“Doesn’t it fucking kill you,” she said lowly, darkly. “We are best hockey players in the world – and fuck being best women’s players, we are best players in the world. And we are what – just stuck playing games that they do not see, that they will never take serious.”
Shane tried to reorient herself. She sighed. “Of course it does,” she said. “But it’s getting—”
“Better, yes, fucking whatever. You should be angry, like me.”

Scott can’t stand Ilya Rozanov. Sure, Rozanov is a generational wunderkind, but he’s also annoying as hell and always ready with a chirp.
“Do you have a spot in the nursing home yet, Hunter? I am hearing from my grandma they go fast!”
“Are you getting tired? It must be past your bedtime already!”
“What kind of skating is that? Is your arthritis acting up again?”
Scott’s age is Rozanov’s favorite topic, but now that Scott has come out, he shudders to think about what Rozanov will throw at him this season.

“There is this club. Here in Boston. It is queer club, but secret. No phones, sign NDA beforehand. The cover charge is high, so is more– more exclusive.” He says this nonchalantly, gesturing to the air. He looks up and makes eye contact with Shane. “We could go.” Shrugs. “Together.”
Shane stares at him, mouth open slightly. He waits for the punchline, like Rozanov is setting up some ridiculous joke. Rozanov just stares back at him, almost as if he isn’t breathing. It takes Shane a second to realize that he is being serious, and the earnestness of the invitation nearly brings him to his knees.
“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane grins. “Are you asking me out on a date?”
