    He was able to lie to himself at first—that the bond they were gradually developing was platonic. Magnus made him smile in a way no one had ever done before. When Magnus kissed him for the first time, he told himself that friends kiss sometimes. Maybe not the way Magnus had kissed him, making Alec's heart beat out of his chest and his face burn, but friends kissed. When they had sex, he lied to himself by saying that he wasn't technically gay because he was the one inserting. It was no different from having sex with a woman (not that he had ever done that!). Alec couldn't lie to himself the first time he was on bottom, when he let Magnus have his way with him. It broke something in Alec. He loved the way it felt, being filled with Magnus, but it also meant he couldn't pretend he wasn't gay anymore. He already went against his parents' wishes by coming to this school. He couldn't help but fear what would happen if they found out about him.

    Growing up in the church, Alec was taught that same-sex soulmates were always platonic. Now that he's found his in college, he's struggling to undo the decades long homophobia he was raised in.
