    Yuujin’s hands flex around the sheets. “I know little of Western musical notation compared to you,” he continues, “but you did teach me some over our years in London, and after that performance, I couldn’t forget the sound of the koto and violin together. It took me many days, but I tried to notate the violin part as much as I could, and I obtained the music for the koto part after paying the composer handsomely. She quite appreciated it.”

    Herlock stares at him, speechless.

    “I had imagined,” Yuujin says, soft, “that we might play it together, one day.”

    Iris’ grip on his hand tightened.  “I had a question I wanted to ask you,” she said.  “Well, it’s kind of a question.  More like I had a confirmation I wanted to ask about regarding a matter that I had already deduced.”

    They turned a corner, and Mikotoba gave her hand a reassuring squeeze.  “Well, you won’t get an answer if you never ask your question.  I assure you that you can ask me anything, and I will answer whatever I can within my power.”

    “Okay.”  Iris took a deep breath.  “You and Daddy are in love with each other, aren’t you?”

    Mikotoba’s head jerked up at the sound. He had been sitting by the living room table, drinking tea, newspaper in hand, but he threw down the paper and rushed over, his face pale with worry.
