“I can't,” Will sighed.

"I'm glad I went," Mike murmurs near Will's ear.
"Had fun?" Will asks playfully.
"Oh, yeah," Mike stretches sarcastically.
They stay like that for a little longer than necessary, then reluctantly separate, still looking at each other. Will can't hold the eye contact for long, and turns away, biting down a smirk.
"Goodnight, then," he breathes out.
"Yeah. Goodnight," Mike nods nervously and smiles. That same stupid dorky smile.

“So if you don’t really, uh… think about what kind of girls you’re into,” Will starts, words slow and a little slurred together, “what do you, you know…”
Mike leans back further into the couch, head tipping against the cushions. Will watches as his curls fall away from his neck, exposing the line of his throat.
“What do I what?” Mike asks.
His words are just as clumsy, and the thought brings a pleasant warmth to Will’s stomach.
“What do you think about,” Will tries again, gesturing vaguely with his hands—hands that don’t feel entirely connected to the rest of him. “When you…” He trails off, face heating. He makes another gesture with his hands, one that he sees guys do in the hallways to gross each other out.
Mike’s mouth curves upward, slow and amused. His eyes are heavy-lidded, glassy in the lamplight.
“Jerk off?” he supplies, almost playfully.

It’s the first summer after Mike and Will leave for college.
They’re roommates at NYU, but for now they’re back in Hawkins—working at the new Starcourt Mall and trying to have the summer they never got growing up.
Bonfires. Lover’s Lake. The whole Party back together. Everything should be easy.
Except Will wants a summer full of firsts. Starting with his first kiss.
And Mike suddenly has a lot of feelings about that.
“Lucas, your turn,” Max said, biting her lips.
Lucas didn’t turn his head to face her. They had this telepathic link between them, after dating for several years. Mike hated it. “Dare.”
Max leaned into her hands, thinking. “I dare you to kiss Will.”
Mike’s eyes went wide, then wider. He stuttered, “why are you doing all the daring, huh?”
“Because I can.”
