“I saw Max giving you a Wonder Woman comic last week, and Diana is awesome, don’t get me wrong, but there’s a big wide world outside of DC Comics and I am more than happy to be your guide.” El is staring down at the neat pile of comic books in her hands with a bemused smile while Dustin continues to ramble about superheroes and TIE fighters.
“You… thought I would like these?” She seems surprised that Dustin has thought of her at all, and it makes a spike of sadness twist in his stomach. Dustin knows she’s still getting used to the whole friendship thing, that people going out of their way to think of her and do nice things for her is unfamiliar and new. He resolves to make more of an effort, because she deserves more than just Mike and Max doing things for her.
Dustin notices El reading comics. A friendship brews.

Summary
Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

Summary
All this time, he’d thought El was penance, for his failure to protect Will. That being with her was atonement, for wanting the wrong things, for feeling the wrong way. But it hadn’t helped— Will kept leaving. And El did, too. Mike keeps losing people, and nothing he does brings them back.
Each time Mike thinks of Will, he feels the weight of cosmic responsibility.
He's doesn't know what he feels for Will anymore. But he knows for certain that it isn't allowed.

Shit. Mike felt his own jaw drop without even realizing it.
“No, he doesn’t,” Max said, but it came out more like a question than anything. And then she looked over at Mike, who was horribly red in the face and was suddenly feeling an overwhelming urge to reconnect with nature after this. “Wait. Does he?”
OR: Mike gets jealous at a party, accidentally reveals that Will has a boyfriend, and neglects to tell anybody that he's the boyfriend in question.
