Summary
Caitlyn steals a moment to herself in the shade, finds herself wishing briefly that she had brought her camera with her. The way the sunlight catches aflame in the pink of Vi's hair. The spread of her shoulders, loose and shaking with laughter, the way her hands move smooth and calm, conducting the children around her in a dance none of them know about.
Then Vi looks up and it is a sunbeam, the first dawn, light creeping over the mountains warm and inevitable. Blue-grey eyes so warm she could drown in their depths, cheeks full and ruddy, that one grin that Caitlyn loves more than anything so, so wide.

The sludge has long since seeped into her boots, a disgusting grey tinted with the rainbow sheen of what can only be oil. Vi is very careful to make sure her gauntlets don't dip into this really gross soup. She'll have to take all of it apart and re-grease everything to get any peace of mind.

And then Lux noticed something else – the painting that hung above the couch.
It was all strong colors and broken perspective that blended together into shapes that were clear and recognizable, but bordering on abstract. An ocean, swirls of blue on top of blue. A ship. A city on the background, a thin layer of white to represent the fog. And the lights, blurry, spilling over foreground and background like liquid.
A distinctively expressionist piece, Lux thought, fascinated.
And the signature at the bottom – that sharp ‘K’ that looked more like a sideways ‘V’, contrasting with the circular brush strokes above it.
“Huh.” Lux said, and brushed her fingers against the canvas, feeling the rough texture. “What do you know.”
