Six months in and the New Avengers had fallen into a routine with only a few bumps in the road. And being in charge of them isn't too hard. All things considered, Bucky thought being a leader wasn't so bad. The worst part was dealing with Valentina and keeping them from biting each other's heads off and trying to shrug off that exhaustion that just won't go away. But everything was fine, really. Nothing worth mentioning.

Ava stumbled into the common room at an hour that was far too early for anything other than coffee and brooding.
The first thing she noticed is that the TV was gone. Well, not gone. It was off the wall, instead against the wall and covered in a lace blanket. The Xbox unplugged beside it.
She paused mid step, looking around.
The lights were off, the switches taped down. Instead the rooms lit by candles. Flickering softly in brass holders. Smelling like beeswax and… maybe cinnamon?
From atop the bar, grainy music came out of a gramophone. Like, an actual goddamn gramophone. It wasn't something she recognized, definitely not anything modern.

No, the Winter Soldier is, in fact, his own person. An alter that very rarely comes out to play and, now that he's out, doesn’t really want to go back into the box.

“A fall…” Viktor’s brows crease. “No. No, nothing nearly as crass as a simple fall, I think. We were…” He closes his eyes and exhales. “Beyond the material plane. Cradled in the embrace of the Arcane. It was…infinity.”
“Well, whatever it was, it was up, and now we’re on the ground,” Jayce says firmly, shifting his fingers down from his cheek to check the pulse at his neck. It’s steady, if quick and a bit faint. “So until we get some more points of data, I’m gonna treat this as a fall.”
Viktor exhales again, and then–
He laughs.
It’s weak, but it’s warm. The way he used to laugh after spending a long night in the workshop, when Jayce would crack a cheesy joke to try and startle something human from him after hours of intellectual rigor. He laughs, and he grabs at Jayce’s wrist, and he laughs, and he laughs, and Jayce finds himself laughing too.
It’s relief. It’s disbelief. It’s joy. It’s impossible, the two of them. It could never be anything else.

They had to stay close, the heat of their bodies radiating against each other to fight away the cold. Jayce knew this, yet he also knew that even if they were in the blistering heat, fighting bleary exhaustion and sweat seeping bodies, he would still find his way there. Next to him.
___After the explosion, Jayce and Viktor don't find themselves dead, but somewhere else entirely. They have to fight to get themselves home, wherever that is, and in the midst of it all, realize what's been growing between them this whole time.
