Will’s eyes flicked to Lucas. His eyebrows were high up on his forehead, eyes widened, and he shifted up a little straighter, like he was intrigued. Like he knew what was coming, and was bracing for it.
“And— and it’s like… shit, it’s like— kind of awful, y’know? Um. To figure out. The thing’s not awful. Well— maybe. Probably. Possibly? You guys might think so. My dad thinks so. I kind of think so? Uh. Well. Not as much. Not anymore?” His shuddering hand gestured outwards, pointing at nothing, a wide gesticulation of no substance or meaning beyond nervous habit. Mike sucked in another harsh breath. “And it’s like… this— this massive thing. Like, life-changing. It’s kind of re-contextualised my whole life, actually. Like I’ve suddenly switched D&D classes, or something.”

Mike stuffs his hands in his pockets as he waits for the door to swing open. When it finally does, his tense shoulders relax a little at the face that appears on the other side.
Joyce’s eyes widen in surprise when she sees him. Her inquisitive gaze makes him feel small, standing hunched over on her porch in the dim afternoon light. He must look pathetic— like a dog that’s been left out in the rain. “Mike,” she says, her voice laced with mock-cheer. He wishes she would just cut the act already. Kick him to the curb like she clearly wants to. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

Mike seeks refuge at the Byers’ house during an emotional breakdown. He doesn’t feel very welcome there.

“I have a what?” Mason exclaims, eyes widening dramatically as he leans forward on the couch.
Will, ever patient, lays a hand on one of the legs he’s currently kneeling between, settled on the living room rug. “A sister,” he repeats. His voice is a stark contrast to Mason’s, all gentle and calm.
“Yeah, I got that part,” Mason says, dangerously toeing the line into condescension. “What does that mean? Did you go out and adopt a kid while I was at school?”

Mason’s biological sister, newly entered into the foster system, comes to live with Mike and Will. Considering Mason’s history with little girls, his transition into brotherhood is not bound to be pretty.

Mike fucked up.
He knows he’s fucked up the second it happens. He knew he was fucking up even in the moments leading up to it, but honestly he couldn’t bring himself to care— not when the only thing he felt was self-hatred and ice-cold pain, freezing his heart until it numbed to nothingness. He feels nothing still, minutes past the point of no return.

Mike left out one important detail when talking to Will about his depressive episodes— an ugly, horrible detail that should have stayed buried in the past. Mike just had to go dig it up.

Another buzz, then again: “—still here… anyway, call me back. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.”
Joyce realised with a terrible lurch to her heart that Will hadn’t called Mike. He wasn’t finally speaking to him again—it was a cassette tape. A cassette tape of Mike’s voice, a recording from what must’ve been the end of a missed phone call, and he was replaying Mike’s last sentence over and over. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.
When Joyce first saw Mike at five years old—a sweet, caring little thing, jumping to Will’s aid without a second thought—she’d never thought it would end up like this.

It happened casually after that, so casually it almost didn’t register at first. El laughed at something Lucas said, then turned toward Mike and leaned in, instinctively, easily, pressing a kiss to his lips like it was the most logical way to say good morning to him.

For a split moment, Will didn’t understand, the thought so far-fetched, improbable, and ridiculous that it didn’t even cross his mind, but then the realization hit him like a bucket of cold water being dumped over his head.
She thought Mike was going to hit him.
Mike must’ve understood it at the same time, because his hand fell away, quick, like he’d been burned.

Will Byers hadn't the words to use at twelve to explain just why the invasion of the Mind Flayer left shame hot across his cheeks. He didn't dare explore why his memories of Vecna's voice were the times he'd heard it praising him, a lilt of adoration twisted up in his possessive tone. He didn't think to tell his friends just why his body remembered Vecna's presence before his mind.
For years, Will had managed to hide the sides of himself that were nauseated by affection and writhed under intimacy, but after one late night argument in the winter darkness of the Wheeler kitchen, Will finds himself wrapped up in Mike's plan to heal that part of him he'd once swore to never let anyone see.Still... Will can't help but wonder how many weeks of Mike touching him like a lover he can take before losing the few splinters of sanity he'd had left.
TLDR;
Will has severe intimacy issues due to the predatory nature of how Vecna used/treated him as a child, and Mike decides to fix that through touch-exposure-therapy (He's not the smartest boy, cut him some slack).Bookmarked by thundersart

With the distance between them shrinking, Mike panicked. He should've thought the idea through before running his mouth and suggesting it but the thought of Will letting anyone else do this for him, let alone Lucas, made that hot, ugly feeling nip at Mike's insides again.
Before their lips could touch, Mike turned Will's head to the side and let the kiss land on his cheek instead. A beat. Another beat. Will turned his head back to look at Mike but he couldn't meet Will's eyes. His heart was racing and Will's gaze wasn't doing it any favors.
"C-Cheek kiss," he said, "That's one of the types of kisses."
It's the summer after their high school graduation and Will still hasn't had his first kiss yet. Mike offers to teach him all the different kinds of kisses there are. You know, like a best friend would.
It only gets messy from there when the lines of friendship begin to blur into a full blown summer affair.

Will delicately cleans him up, eyes calm and steady, voice comfortably quiet. “I’m not asking you to be.”
