Summary
If Jack had been sick, properly, long-term kind of sick - cancer, maybe - the long, slow march to death would have been unavoidable. Robert would probably have come home, in those slow, final weeks of Jack’s life, and sat by his sickbed, and probably would forgiven his father for being disappointed in all the ways Robert had never lived up to his expectations - taking the blame, once again, because that’s all Robert knew how to do with his dad, shoulder the blame for the crime of his own existence.
