Ilya liked Shane’s parents. He really did. David and Yuna Hollander were entirely devoted to their only child–maybe sometimes a bit intense, if not a little overbearing, in Yuna’s case–and their attentiveness had moulded him into a kind, hardworking, and thoughtful man. Truly, their son was a testament to the quality of both their character’s–Shane’s soft underbelly nurtured by his father’s patient tone and earnest gaze and his shrewdness and talent sharpened by his mother’s fierce mettle. Shane was the sum of his parent’s parts, yet entirely his own, and Ilya was very grateful to the tender, yet firm, hands that had shaped the man he loved. But right now, well, right now Ilya was not their biggest fan.
Jane:
My parents are going to be staying at my place after the game on Friday.Ilya missed Shane. Ilya really needed to have sex with Shane. Now the man's parents were in the way.

He didn’t want to leave, fuck, he never wanted to leave again. He wanted Shane to press his face to his skin for the rest of his life, just like this. He wanted to break open Shane’s ribcage and crawl inside it.

It was during this hysterical lament that Ilya realized what was wrong, what was off. The initial softness, the confusion, the vulnerability. It was out of character — Shane was so often in control of himself, of what he said, even when emotions were high . . . with one exception.
If Ilya fucked him particularly . . . intensely, if he got Shane feeling a lot, he'd get soft afterwards. Quiet, a little ditzy, emotional. The first time it'd happened — or the first time he'd recognized it — was years ago in Las Vegas after winning MVP. He remembered the look on Hollander's face when he left — wide and teary-eyed, lip trembling, tripping over himself.
Since then, with a little trial and error, Ilya had learned how to manage it. Had grown to love it. If he treated him right, he could buff away all of Shane's sharp edges and be left with the soft, gooey inside. Floating and tethering himself to Ilya.
Now, Shane was out there, floating, without anyone to tether himself to. Falling. And suddenly Ilya was panicking, too.

He's not sure if it's because he's from Europe, where everyone greets each other with a hug and a kiss on the cheek, or if it's because he grew up so starved for love and affection that he can't do anything except show Shane how much he loves him at any chance that he has.
So, yes, he knows that he's the one most likely to kiss Shane on the cheek when he skates by him at practice or come up behind Shane when he's cooking dinner just to wrap his arms around him or fall on top of Shane while he's reading on the couch, desperate to have his skin touching Shane's.
But, Shane… Shane loves Ilya differently. It's quieter. More intentional.

Summary
Three weeks ago—in the middle of the night, after a harrowing ordeal—Aaron had helped shuffle an injured Robert out of the car, and they'd both looked up at the Mill with something akin to trepidation.
The building had been cast in the eerie beam from the streetlights across the road, too far away to really do them any good; and so very different from the home that once welcomed them in from a hard day's work so many years ago.
But now, today, after their time away from the village, having grown ever closer, and even with the dreary weather around them spitting rain, they could both feel it—the gentle tug of a fresh start. A new beginning.
And so, barely an hour after arriving back home, and having only just bumped into Victoria to share the news of Robert moving in, they were both on the road again in search of a Christmas tree.

In which Robert and Aaron get back from their holiday, decorate for Christmas, drink some of Ruby's wine, and declare their undying love for each other in all sorts of different ways.

“Shut up,” Ilya says. “I loved it.”
The look Shane gives him says Ilya in no way made it clear, but since it’s only half clear to him, too, he decides to kiss Shane instead. A slow, lingering thing. Just as sweet, but with the heat of a promise behind it. Shane slips his tongue into Ilya’s mouth, and it lights a fire beneath his ribs.
After meeting Shane's parents, Ilya and Shane return to the cottage.
