Summary
At the gates of Bag End, Bilbo Baggins planted the acorn from Beorn’s garden just as the late Dwarven King had urged him to. Though now, he thought it a rather tragic gesture to remember the one he swore more than his fealty to.
But as the seed settled into dainty Shire soil, another seed would sprout under silver Mirkwood leaves, centuries prior to Bilbo’s unexpected journey to Erebor.
A girl, who had not belonged in this Hobbit’s tale before, would grow to retell the fate of Durin’s folk quite differently.
She would be the new otherworldly branch intertwining into their tale, crossing paths with Oakshield and his kin to give what was meant to fall another reason to endure.
And in that strange, converging fluke, everything would change…
A seed, answering a seed.

It had been many years since the King had thought about taking another to his bed. He suffered many long, lonely nights without his beloved Queen until, after his son leaves him, he cannot handle the silence and he finds himself seeking something in the arms of another.
When Eirien finds herself summoned to the King’s chambers out of the blue, she is more than a little confused, but finds herself more than happy to serve her King despite the cost to herself. The biggest rule the King has for this arrangement is to not fall in love with him and it seems such an easy thing to just agree. The Queen may be dead and gone but they are still married and he will always love her, always be bound to her and Eirien knows this... but the more time she spends in his company, the more she gets to actually know him, the more she begins to realise that she has already fallen too deep.
As time continues to pass and Mirkwood continues to darken, the threat of Mordor creeping ever closer, Eirien finds herself at a complete loss. If she confesses, she will lose him for good, but if she keeps quiet, she will only further torment her already broken heart.

Ophelia Carter is both an aspiring artist (ignoring the fact that most of her commissions are to paint overweight pets) and a cleaner for the rich and the powerful. It is through this that she meets one Mycroft Holmes, who has a ‘minor role in the British Government’, of which Ophelia thinks is bullshit. The thing is, Ophelia kind of gets the impression that beyond the icy exterior, he is only slightly possessive, rude and terrifying.
Also, she has a sneaking suspicion that she should not find him as amusing as she does. People are starting to think she’s mad.
A trail of murders from the last two years lead, eventually, to Ophelia, and thank God for the fact she cleans Mister British Government's house, otherwise she would be so screwed.
