Chapter Text
Just when everything was getting better again, and just when Kel thought everything would finally be okay,
A new truth was uncovered, one that changed everything.
I have to tell you something.
Would things have been better if Sunny never revealed the twisted truth behind Mari’s death? Was knowing the truth really worth learning if things just ended up this way?
After Sunny’s confession in the hospital, no one really knew what to do with the new and unexpected information.
Hero was the first to move. Kel didn’t even get a chance to see the look on his face. He simply excused himself and left the room with his head down.
Aubrey was next.
“Really Sunny? A-all these years and you decide to tell us now?” Her voice cracked. “Was it funny to you? Watching all of us believe that she had hung herself, blaming ourselves for her death?”
Sunny bit his lip, hands trembling at his sides. Even if he wasn’t saying anything, Kel could tell what he wanted to say. I’m sorry.
“I can't believe this. You-” Aubrey seemed to stop herself just in time, clenching her hands into fists. “I- I can’t. I’m sorry. I have to go.”
She walked out the door, leaving Kel with Sunny and Basil. The room fell silent.
Kel felt numb.
He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t know what to say. He couldn’t even process what just happened. One minute, they were all smiling in relief to see that Sunny had woken up. And now.. this..?
It felt like everything was repeating itself once again. They promised they’d always be there for each other. But one by one they were leaving, and soon Kel would find himself all alone once more.
“Kel.”
Kel forced himself to meet Sunny’s gaze. The younger boy’s face was stricken with guilt, a couple stray tears rolling down his cheeks. Kel wasn’t used to him expressing so much emotion. The fear, the guilt, all the raw emotions were so evident in his expression.
“I- I’m sorry. It’s my fault.” Sunny rasped out. He held on the table beside the door, as if his legs would give away if he let go. “I understand if you can’t forgive me. You don’t have to pretend.”
Kel felt his gut wrench. He wanted to forgive him. He wanted him to stop crying. But the words wouldn’t come out.
“It’s okay, Kel.” He heard Basil say softly. The blonde-haired boy was looking up at him with eyes that looked tired yet still full of kindness.
Kel shook his head slightly. “I-it’s not okay.”
“I know, and that’s okay. Sunny’s right, you don’t have to pretend it is.”
Upon hearing those words, Kel just wanted to drop to the floor and scream his heart out. They knew. Sunny and Basil knew just how fucked up their actions were.
But they made a promise.
They promised to be there for one another, and Kel wasn’t one who broke his promises. No matter how much he wanted to hate them, no matter how much he just wanted to give up and run away, he made a promise to never let anyone suffer on their own again.
“No.” Kel breathed out. The two boys stared at him in question, and it took him a lot of effort to keep his voice from shaking as he continued on.
“I- I won’t leave. The others just need time---we all need time. But I’ll make things work, and I’ll be here for you guys.. yeah? This doesn’t excuse what you two did, but don’t worry. Everything will be okay.
I promise.
