When they’re on the forecastle, with the helm just behind them and the figurehead casting them further in shadow, Usopp calls, “Raise the sails!”
Luffy’s gasp next to his ear is the best part of his entire day.
The sails unfold in a great rolling crash of canvas. Even the striped gaff swings out, catching the wind. The whole sloop gives a powerful lurch as if she’s eager to sprint out of port on the back of whatever gale blows along next.
And painted on the foresail, bold and bright and proud, is a grinning Jolly Roger in a yellow straw hat.
“That’s mine,” Luffy whispers, hushed and awed.
“Told you so,” Usopp says smugly.

Summary
It’s an old wives’ tale. A sailor’s superstition. The sort of thing that isn’t taken seriously and that no one really believes, except no one disbelieves it, either.
A respawned Fruit, they say, remembers the body before. It retains an echo of its former user.
Sabo didn’t put much stock in those stories, because there was no reliable way to study the phenomenon without a significant amount of murder, and also because it didn’t really apply to him besides. He had a million other things on his mind, an army to babysit, and no plans of becoming a Fruit user in the first place.
The universe sure loves to laugh at him.

Summary
Nika has been very careful all this time to not overwhelm Luffy. They had never expected to get so attached to a host, but Luffy was surprising! Absolutely the funniest best human they'd ever interacted with. So while the promises the boy held fast to chafed like chains many sizes too small, Nika wouldn't let that hurt Luffy.
It was fine, because Luffy was always fun to be with, even when they weren't as free as Nika wished.
Still, while promises weren't meant to be broken, Nika wasn't against taking advantage of the Luffy-sized flaw. Better yet, Luffy wouldn't be against it either, not when it would mean freedom and adventure.

Summary
The Gumgum no mi is a fruit like no other. Where some Zoan fruit might be insulted at being renamed yet Nika thought it was one of the funniest things. It was just a name, and a name wouldn't affect anything. Humans were entertaining, though the boy who ate them was a cranky lonely child. That would be boring, assuming he survived their joining. But the boy, Luffy, ached for friends and fun. His need to be free of his fate was so strong that maybe... Maybe Nika would bend the rules just a bit. It would be a shame to not see how far the boy would go.

The grin is wide, all sharp teeth and sharp edges, and she knows that outsiders have found the expression to be unnerving. Menacing even. The red, glowing eyes, the teeth glinting in the dark, the corners of his lips pulled up sharply. Yes, she can see how it could be considered threatening.
But not to her. Nami only sees an unending hunger for life. For joy and adventure. The red in his eyes is not the red of a hell yet to be unleashed on this world, it's the red of a sunrise breaking over the sea. His grin is not warning her to stay away, it is taunting her to join him.
'What? Scared?', it teases as he takes her hand and leads her into a new era.
'I haven't been scared since the dust of Arlong Park settled at my feet.' Nami thinks as she flicks at the cloud and watches him softly laugh in reaction. 'I will never be scared again.'

But then Garp the Hero, Garp the Murderer of his Captain, asks him to look after one child only, the boy that Shanks had already crowned. Shanks relents, and hopes that someday in the future, Luffy will forgive him.

That has to be the stupidest name for a guy who isn’t even wearing a hat that Ace has ever heard. It’s definitely fake, definitely come up with on the spot, and it almost makes him so annoyed he stops crying.
