Ekko stole another baked scallop before fastening the lower portion of his mask, then approached the dance floor. People glided across polished marble, akin to automatons spinning in a music box. A bit predictable for his tastes, but that had its perks. After swapping a few partners, he could flee. Then when twenty different people next week asked about the masquerade, he’d have something to talk about.
By the third and final partner, Ekko found more than a discussion topic. He found a reason to stay.
Five years after the battle, Ekko bumps into the last person he expects to see at a masquerade.
