The pair of ten year olds stayed like that for a while, nudging each other, giggling as they figured out how to pass a bit of fire back and forth between their hands without it disappearing. All they needed was Luffy sprawled across their legs, and it would be perfect - the best Sabo could remember feeling since before everything went wrong back home.
It didn’t last, of course.

Ace couldn’t hear any sound Luffy might’ve been making over the noise of Porchemy howling, Sabo yelling, the strike of sharpened steel against rusted metal, but he did hear the twerp inside his own head, those quiet gasps and gulps, the weak calling of his and Sabo’s names. He’d gotten a decent glimpse when they first came crashing through the wall, of blood and cuts and tears.
He knew exactly what those gloves had been doing, before he and Sabo showed up.

If a single twelve year old could get on their nerves that much, then clearly they were worthless losers.
But more than not being able to holler insults at their captors, Ace hated that he couldn’t say a word to comfort Luffy.

When Shanks and his crew first arrive at the quiet little fishing village where Vice Admiral Garp is rumored to spend his vacation time, there’s a kid on the dock who waves so enthusiastically at their incoming ship that he slips off the damp boards and topples into the water. Instantly, two smaller kids (who definitely weren’t waving) yelp and jump after him, grabbing the flailing kid’s arms in an effort to drag him towards dry land.
It’s funny, but not so funny Shanks doesn’t feel kinda bad, so he leaps down to help.
Which is how he meets nine year old Monkey D. Luffy, and his adopted six year old brothers, Ace and Sabo.

Comforted in spite of himself, the boy rolled over to better snuggle down into the warm softness, and fell instantly asleep.
Or: being the Pirate King’s son means a lot of people unknowingly tell Ace he never should have been born. It also means several items formerly belonging to Gold Roger make their way into his possession, whether he wants them to or not.
For instance, a coat. A sword. A rather opinionated ship.
(The Hat considers it. The Hat decides to stay with someone else, instead, but that’s alright, considering the someone else is still family.)

After all, the King of Goa only has two daughters, the elder of whom will one day be Queen, and that makes sons of a certain age all the more valuable to noble families at the moment. The highest station that Sachie could hope to marry is a boy a few years older than herself, a cousin-once-removed of the King, whom she distinctly remembers getting into an awful fight with Sabo once. She also distinctly remembers her mother fretting over the higher-ranked boy, and trying to get Sachie to do so as well, while Sabo stood there scuffed and bleeding with his head hanging low.Privately, only in the safety of her own mind, Sachie thinks she would rather leave Goa entirely than marry such a boy. And she also, in those moments, understands completely why Sabo chose to run away, rather than participate in the stupid competition to marry a princess.
(That doesn’t make her miss him any less.)

Sheer willpower saw Garp achieve whatever he wanted, whatever he needed, and no flashy abilities could serve him better, especially not at the cost of being able to jump into the ocean and wrestle a Sea King or three for his dinner.
But sheer willpower couldn’t get his grandsons back from the grave.

Zeff doesn’t believe for one minute his scrawny little Eggplant, who only weighs ninety pounds soaking wet, really managed to cook up a wealth of frozen fish to eat entirely on his lonesome the first time it happens. But he lets it slide anyway; and the second time too, and the third, until it becomes a regular thing, going on for a couple of months. Not every morning, but at least two or three times a week, Zeff notices a missing tray or empty box, and double checks his inventory to confirm yet another selection of meat has up and vanished.
Clearly, Eggplant’s cooking and feeding the stuff to someone, and just as clearly doesn’t want to come clean about it.
(In later hindsight, Zeff supposes he can understand why.)

“No one let us in,” Zoro complains. He’s still on the floor, wrapped up in- something, Kuina can’t quite tell with her vision only slowly coming back into focus. “There was a ladder hanging off the side that we climbed up, and the doors opened on their own!”
“...huh,” the first voice says. Blinking rapidly, Kuina can make out a top hat, and blue coat, and both her and Zoro’s swords tucked under one arm. Annoyed by that, she kicks free of her sheets and slides off the bed, opposite where Zoro is still struggling with his giggling assailant.
“We didn’t mean to intrude,” the girl announces, borrowing every ounce of stiff patience she’s ever seen her father wield. “If the storm is over, we’ll get back in our boat and leave.”
That top hat tips to one side as its owner regards her. “What boat?”
A few minutes later, Kuina finds herself staring dumbly over the ship’s railing at empty water.
