He has practiced this too often now for there to be any negative response. A few weeks ago, when he had been newly turned and was still reluctant to partake in feeding himself, before he had honed his persuasion into the deadly weapon it was now, his victims would attempt to struggle. Their attempts to scream and cry for help had been met with a crushed windpipe, but the early bruising mixed with panic had tainted the meal, and so the creature had been forced to improve his calming influence.
Fortunately some human traits, the useful ones, he had kept after his transformation. And so he kept his stubbornness, his need to learn as much as possible. And it had certainly come in handy. Now, rarely would his prey struggle for escape, unless of course the boy was looking for a challenge.

It’s like he doesn’t want anyone to think he’s capable of being hurt.

Summary
Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.

Before he can stop himself, he picks up the phone. Every ring seems to last for eternity. Please, he thinks, be there, pick up, don’t be dead, don’t be gone…
“Viktor?”
His heart jumps. Silco’s voice is muffled, sleep-thick, but oh so achingly familiar. He had not realised until now just how much he missed it.
“You do realise it is 2 o’clock in the morning?”
He tries to speak but no words come out. The guilt, perhaps, has stolen them.
“Has something happened?”
“Papa,” he finally whispers. “Papa. Papa.” And then all of a sudden he is bawling his eyes out, horrible, heaving gasps and sobs torn from his throat, wracking his thin frame, and distantly he is embarrassed, but he cannot seem to make himself stop.
Worn down by the crushing weight of (not actually) unrequited love, workplace disputes, past trauma, and the existential dread that comes with being an overachiever in your twenties, Viktor finally breaks. Papa Silco comes to pick up the pieces.
Returning to his childhood home in Zaun for a long-overdue rest, Viktor must reckon with his past, his future, and the terrifying prospect of allowing himself to be loved and cared for.
