The distant crash of the waves rumble in sync with his stuttered breaths as he crosses the crest of the hill with a heavy heart, the horizon vanishing behind him, leaving only the steadiness of land to comfort him. Leorio and Kurapika don't seem too phased by it, but they don't know it as he does. They don't know how Gon's heart pumps saltwater and how his lungs were made for to hold, made to be submerged in violent depths.
When the Kiriko hoist them in their large claws, soaring at dizzying heights, Leorio shouts something about not looking down.
But Gon is only looking to the sea, always to the sea.

Summary
Whale Island has never felt so small and isolated as right then, standing next to Aunt Mito’s letterbox holding a postcard from someone he’s suddenly not sure he’ll see again for a very long time.
After parting with Killua at the World Tree, Gon returns to Whale Island, weighed down with regrets. Sporadic postcards from afar are now his only connection to his best friend, fragile threads stretching across the vast distance as he tries to untangle what Killua truly means to him. As he drifts in the ache of separation and an uncertain future, darkness stirs on the horizon and threatens to draw them back together - whether they are ready or not.
My attempt to fill in the gaps for Gon and Killua between the World Tree and the Black Whale, with some creative liberties taken!
