I am bitter about the majority of Season Five, so here is a rewrite more rooted in the small town horror of Seasons One and Two. Will include Byler, actual stakes, fights that are not Marvel-ified, consequences, deep talks, Mike has a braincell and uses it, questions answered etc.
[EXCERPT:]
Ca-clunk. The radio clicked on by itself, and Mike dragged his hands down his face. Here came the regularly scheduled military broadcast!
“Attention citizens of Hawkins.” A resonating male voice garbled out of the speaker. “It is currently 5:43 on Sunday, November 1st. Curfew remains sharp at 6:00. All citizens are required to return to their residencies immediately to satisfy this curfew. If you are unable to return to your house by this time, please approach your nearest friendly soldier or officer, and they will be happy to give you a ride free of charge. Help keep Hawkins safe and do your part.”
Mike’s eyes strained from how hard he was rolling them. He jabbed Will with his elbow. “Help keep Hawkins safe, my ass. What do you think they’re really doing?”
Through a mouthful of mashed potatoes, Will mumbled: “Probably letting the demos run wild at night as a natural pest control.”

Notorious by name and his deceptively sweet appearance, the only place left to run was the mountains. Where he finds himself caught in a snare laid by the superstitious people of an isolated village, where certain fates are un-avoided and endings inevitable.
TLDR: High fantasy AU; Jax is sacrificed to the patron goddess of a small mountain village and becomes her pet.
