Stone is tasked to find Shadow, he eventually does and accidentally ends up taking him in. He recognized his hurt and realized that maybe they both need each other.The entire series is them learning how to navigate through life. Through grief. Stone makes it his mission to take care of Shadow. Helping him through his trauma and to want to live through life and finding the things that matter.
The specials are adorable too! I loved the Halloween one! I used it as a countdown to Halloween lol!

"No! Listen for once!" Sonic's fists clench at his sides. A crackle of blue Chaos energy sparks across his knuckles, lighting up the narrow hallway in a quick, bright flicker. "You think you could survive being me? Even for a DAY?!"
Tom freezes when he sees the sparks. "Sonic! Your hands..."
Sonic ignores him, breath coming fast. His eyes turn blue. "You think it's all fun? Saving the world? Running fast? It's not just speed! It's electricity and noise and pressure all the time!" The energy flares again, brighter. "You have no idea how hard it is!"
Tom holds out a cautious hand. "l was in school once upon a time, believe it or not. It was hard for me too."
"Like fifty years ago!"
"I'm not that old..."
Tom and Sonic switch bodies. What could possibly go wrong?

There, he is found by someone who looks almost identical to him - except this stranger is bound to an ancient emerald, its power embedded in him after a near-catastrophic accident and slowly tearing him apart. With a goal in mind and no strength to reach it alone, Shadow agrees to help in exchange for access to the ARK’s files. It is meant to be a calculated arrangement. Yet he soon finds himself drawn into the orbit of a next-to-normal, unconventional family, caught in the middle of their conflicts and bonds, and forced to realise that everything he once believed about trust, belonging and acceptance has been painfully incomplete.

Suppose his escape pod was just damaged enough that GUN never found him, in all those years? What might he become, without Gerald's manipulations? What might he feel, younger and still bereaved? And what might he decide, in a little house by Never Lake, with the person who found him instead?
A look into how things might have gone for Shadow, if the worst day of his life hadn't been followed by GUN and Gerald each trying to outdo it. Rated T due to Maria's final moments, realistically described, and for references to emotional/psych abuse by Gerald to keep his medical experiment compliant.

Summary
There was never supposed to be just one Ultimate Lifeform.
However, G.U.N invaded the ARK before Gerald Robotnik got the chance to make his ideas into a reality. He would be imprisoned and soon executed. The only things he left behind were plans for a canon capable of destroying planets and the blueprints for two lifeforms that would be equal to Shadow.
One with the power to absorb all energies, no matter how dark. One with the power to turn mere thoughts into weapons.
Those plans were meant to be forgotten until a blue hedgehog appeared in a small town in Montana. His appearance made G.U.N come to a decision.
Awake the past.
Reform the present.
Create the future.
In time, G.U.N would have their three weapons.

Shadow barely paid attention to the name, but it settled in his mind regardless, repeating a few times in his thoughts. It suited him, somehow—fast, loud, and impossible to ignore.
The white hedgehog hesitated before finally speaking. "...Silver." His voice was quiet, raspy, as if he hadn’t used it in a while. But the moment Shadow heard it, the name clicked into place.
Both of them turned to look at him then, waiting. He frowned, hesitating for a moment before sighing deeply. "...Shadow."
Or—Shadow survives, finds a new home, and, without even noticing, becomes an older brother.

Now hooked on drugs while trying to fight off evil - Shadow is at a downfall. . .So what does he do when a portal opens and he sees his dead friends again.

Sonic and Rouge find an abandoned GUN facility. Rouge was tasked in retrieving a “dangerous weapon”. Instead they discover a child. A child who was mangled. Who was left for dead. Sonic brings him home. Cares for him as his own kid. He tries his best to heal him with the help with Tails. Until GUN finds out and captures him again. But Sonic wasn’t having it. He immediately rescues him. Then they live happily ever after!!! Huzzah!!!!
