"Nothing was happening," Tails grumbles a bit too gloomy for his brother not to notice.
"I can tell by your gleeful demeanor," Sonic retorts.
"Do you even know what those words mean?" Tails asks and rolls his eyes.
"I know a lot of words, I know all of them, actually," Sonic responds and uses his upper body strength to sit up without moving his legs. The hedgehog grabs one of the fox's tails and starts running his fingers through it. Tails only flinches a little when the hedgehog's thumb brushes over the scar at the base, "But that's not the point, you've been acting off ever since you and the kiddos had that talk. They were being nice to you, right?"

Father's Day is on the horizon, and leading up to it, the little fox is faced with questions about the nature of his and Sonic's relationship, as well as his own function in the great story of Sonic The Hedgehog. Summary
Sonic and Tails are more than just best friends. They are brothers, and through every hardship that's been thrown at them, they've gotten through it together. But when Infinite's attack leads to Sonic's imprisonment and Tails believing him dead, holding onto hope becomes impossible. Infinite is planning more than just torture for Sonic. He wants to tear apart his mind until he can't tell illusion from reality, or remember if the young fox is his dearest friend or an enemy trying to kill him.
Tails, meanwhile, refuses to accept that Sonic is dead, and will do anything to get him back. But even if he succeeds, nothing will ever be the same. The war in the outside world continues to destroy everything that the gang holds dear, but when the damage is deep within, how can it ever be rebuilt?

Summary
For as long as Tails can remember, Sonic's always made up a different story about how they first met. He's said he found Tails following him through the jungle, that he fell on him from out of a tree, that he caught him fixing his plane... It has become a constant just how inconsistent he can be with all these different versions of the same story. But Sonic's just having a bit of fun and exercising his right as his big brother to mess with him a little. Over the years it became their own silly tradition in a way.
Until Tails realizes the real reason why Sonic doesn't tell it right.
Time isn't a straight line, and the stitches holding their story together are a little uneven, but like Sonic says, the how isn't always what matters. That it happened at all is what does.

If Tails had known making that promise meant leaving him behind, he would've asked Sonic to take it back. He didn't mind getting hurt sometimes if it meant he could stay with Sonic forever.
