Summary
It had started with a deal and ended with a deal. He supposes he had kept his first deal; now they really would be together until the end of time. Once those words had felt like a reward, they had turned into a punishment. There was no denying that this had been of his own making—that of an insecure outcast in search of validation for a genius he knew he possessed. He had worked his whole life to be able to say he knew that about himself, to make it the core of his individuality, to make it something integral that could only be inflated and never taken away.
Perhaps that is why he is here.
(Or Weirdmaggedon ends with a deal between Ford and Bill in exchange for the world's safety, but what Bill gets in return is unknown)

As he nears he is pleased to see Hob standing outside, in front of the Inn. Upon closer examination however, it would be more specific to say that Hob is standing in front of an ancient black Bentley, that is parked in front of the New Inn, while twirling the keys and smirking in Dream’s general direction. Dream feels himself light up from within. On the outside, this manifests as the slightest twinge of a smile.
“Dream my friend! This is fantastic timing, duck. Care for a drive?”
Dream’s eyes narrow. “What is that monstrosity?”

Dream is finally settling into the new century, with the help of his dearest friend. As he tries to re-engage with humanity, he is also realizing that his feelings for Hob Gadling might run a bit deeper. These feelings come to a head during a road trip in which an apparently bewitched car radio keeps playing the most apt songs, each of which seems to somehow feature dreams, nightmares, and hidden feelings quite prominently.Bookmarked by UnsightlyMuse

After scathing words from his ex-wife, Dream is left to consider his failures that had brought low those he loved and who had once loved him. He had failed his son, disowned the boy even as Orpheus had disowned him in turn. Faced with the knowledge that Calliope was right, and with inspiration from his sister Death, he takes the old adage of walking a mile in someone’s shoes quite literally. Dream decides to spend a year and a day forgoing his power to walk among mortals as one of them with the belief that by the time he reaches Orpheus it will be with a new understanding deep enough to beg forgiveness.
His pilgrimage begins at the one place in the waking world with which he is currently familiar, the White Horse tavern, only to swiftly find out he is woefully ill-prepared. Dependent on the aid of an unexpected companion in one Hob Gadling, Dream must not only learn to be honest with himself, but honest with others as well.

When his dear stranger returns after over a hundred years, Hob assumes they will return to their regular routine. Instead, the visits become frequent, more casual, and slowly his friend he now knows is Dream of the Endless opens up to him. He tasks Hob Gadling with an impossible mission: teach Morpheus what it is to be human, how to grow and heal as a human, or else the cracks in The Dreaming may never fully close.
But humanity is complicated. Healing is nonlinear, with many wounds and little sutures, and to grow sometimes means derooting the past. As their connection grows from something centurial and casual to a reccurring pull towards one another, bordering on love, Hob helps Morpheus expose the horrific underbelly of his biggest mistakes and most painful betrayals, happiest days and darkest nights, in order to allow himself the room for something new to blossom in place of the pain.

"I am willing to...pay...rent," Dream says, each successive word loaded with more uncertainty, until his voice has actually risen on the word 'rent.' Not quite a question, but as near to it as Dream is likely to get in this situation, which is rapidly becoming desperately uncomfortable (for Dream) and confusing (for Hob).
"Do you know how money works?" is the first question that pops out of Hob's mouth.
After making an ill-advised bet with his sister, Dream of the Endless is rendered completely human for one year. In need of a place to stay he turns to Hob, unaware that his oldest friend has been holding a torch for him for the past several centuries. Human experiences! Living life to the fullest! Overcoming depression! Food trucks!
It's going to be a long year.

In 1689, Hob Gadling and Dream meet once more, after Hob has lost everything. That night, their meeting goes on longer than expected when the conversation turns to what it means to live, to lose, and to be the fathers of dead sons. Unable to bear the thought of sending a man who so echoes Dream's own grief back into the night alone, Dream breaks his own rule and invites Hob to stay with him for a time, at least until he can get back on his feet.
The story of two grief-stricken, divorced, and widowed fathers to sons they lost too young truly seeing one another and there, at their lowest point, doing their best to put themselves and each other back together.
