Vi shook her head, too fast. “You don’t know what you saw.”
“I do. I saw finger marks, Vi. Around your throat.” Caitlyn’s voice rose despite herself, and her eyes were sharp, searching. “Are you really going to pretend I imagined that?”
Vi looked cornered. Her body tensed, as if every muscle inside her had seized up. Her eyes darted to the pavement, to the trees, to anywhere but Caitlyn.
“I don’t—” she started, her voice small.
“Why won’t you let me care about you?” Caitlyn asked, her voice cracking. “Why won’t you let me in? Is this even a friendship if you won’t let me help?”

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Caitlyn said as they walked. “That the worst is over, that we’re standing on the other side.”
A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”

Caitlyn panicked, feeling extraordinarily unprepared having been thrust into her new position without so much as even a handbook to consult. What were the formalities? What was she supposed to respond with? Where was the damn push to talk button…
“Hellooo? I said Houston, do you copy?”
Caitlyn fiddled with her headset, having finally found the green button on the side and hastily letting out a rather breathless reply. “Um, yes. Hello? This is Houston. I copy.”
There was a long pause in which Caitlyn sat twiddling her thumbs, anxiety pushing the frantic pulse of her heartbeat through her eardrums. Was that wrong? Did she already fuck up? She took a steady deep breath, finger hovering over the talk button until the familiar voice of the astronaut came through her headset once more.
“Damn, Houston. I didn’t expect you to sound so sexy.”

Caitlyn has been assigned as the personal capcom to one of the astronauts currently on a year long expedition at the international space station. Cue long months of pining and desperate longing.

Caitlyn takes that in. Vi’s reminded she has so few pieces of the sister Vi grew up with. Of the girl she prayed would still be alive and waiting for her if—when—she ever got free from that shithole they put her in.
“Then it’s probably for the best that I didn’t,” Caitlyn says. "I have a job to do. And I already know it’s much harder to do it if you care too much about someone involved.”

Fresh out of Stillwater and clinging to the knowledge her sister is still alive, Vi struggles to reconcile the life she’s returned to with the life she was torn out of. Caitlyn, determined to find Jinx and hold her accountable for the attack on the council, keeps pushing her to move forward. Everything else is pulling her back—memories, ghosts. Vi's not coping. But time has a way of giving as much as it takes, with any luck. And with love.

Time and time again, Violet has traded her life and happiness for others. She placed her heart in the hands of those she loved and could do nothing but watch as those she trusted squeezed it into atrophy. Caitlyn had done it herself: stomped on Violet’s vulnerable heart without a second glance and left her to bleed out. It’s not something she thinks she’ll ever be able to forgive herself for.

Dr. Kiramman steers her through the chaos and plants her in a chair. Does something to her arm that hurts like fuck, then drapes her in bags of ice and wraps her in a sling. Blinds her with a pen light—“Called it,” she mumbles when he confirms she’s concussed—and presses two pills and a warm mug into her hand. It smells herbaceous. Familiar.
“I brought the good stuff from home,” Dr. Kiramman confesses, and it takes her a moment to understand he means tea. “Extra honey for you. I know you haven’t acquired the taste.”
He’s right in that she only actually drank it once, the first time it was offered—the afternoon they spoke to the Council, several lifetimes ago. But she tasted it just this morning in Caitlyn’s mouth, grassy and sweet. So she pops the pills and takes a sip. Tries not to think about whether that terrified kiss over breakfast was their last. “I want to see her.”
After the war, Vi and Cait recover, and rebuild.
