This might be the last story I ever tell. Definitely the last story I will ever type on this laptop, as I plan to chuck this cursed device into the nearest pool of acid the very second I send this draft to Calliope for proofreads and erase this whole episode from my memory. Hermes said it would do nothing to destroy any of the actual content on it, as everything is “stored in the Cloud” nowadays, but go for it man, get it out of your system. Lately, everybody’s been telling me to go for it man, get it out of your system. They’ve also been walking on eggshells and keep giving me their therapists’ contact information.
Wow, Apollo, you may be wondering. What is this tale about? Can it really be more traumatic than your six month road trip across America, bound to a pipsqueak slave-master and fighting off such distinguished enemies as real estate tycoons, giant snakes, horse-fuckers, the specters of all your past regrets and/or mistakes, fungal acne and your toxic ex?
Yes. It can. You can stop trying to hide your glee, reader.
Apollo thought his trials were over. Well, Apollo thought wrong.

“Nay,” Apollo said conversationally and walked away. “I am merely a realist. Love seems silly to me. People throw their whole lives away for another person, and then, they get disappointed because their vision of that person is just a vision. That is all it will ever be. They have made someone up in their mind, and then, they have cast away a marriage, their position, their virtue and for what? A lie they told themselves.”
Apollo realized his mistake the moment he finished his little rant. Ares had done just that for his love of Aphrodite. He had given up his position, lost his virtue in the eyes of Olympus, and Aphrodite had lost her marriage to Hephaestus. He was not mocking Ares, he was not mocking his brother, he was just stating how he felt about love. But Ares was not angry, instead, his expression was filled with pity.
“I think love will take you by surprise,” Ares said simply. “She often does that.”

Percy was four years old the first time his dreams led him to his many-great-grandmother’s chambers- a woman long dead yet somehow still seated in front of him, fingers grasping at her hair tightly as she wails about a wooden horse on the beach while her servants look on in pity. He feels the weight of something ancient and heavy settle on his shoulders in that moment.
He was in his 1st grade classroom when his teacher screamed at him for making up lies about gods and monsters and scaring the other children. He was eight when his mother's own visions become too much for her to bear.
He's at Yancy when Grover Underwood finally finds him and says "I believe you" for the first time. And as Percy begins to feel lighter, that ancient weight that has followed him his whole life slowly dissipating, he realizes that being believed can be just as horrifying as being thought mad.
