Summary
While many mothers would kill to have their children get along as well as the brothers did, Walburga would (and probably had. She was prone to performing blood magic rituals whenever something she wanted seemed out of reach) kill to have her children love each other less. The pompous woman had always viewed the brothers’ closeness as something to scoff at- uncouth, she had often described it as. Improper.
Of course, the main reason she despised the children’s closeness was because they were far more vulnerable separated than they were together. Many a time she had tried to break the boys’ spirits, to mold them into the proper young men she so wanted them to become. And yet, each time her efforts were in vain- the brothers always seemed to hold each other up.
Which is why tomorrow would be such an opportunistic day for Walburga, and such a foreboding one for the brothers- the day Sirius Black would leave for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The day that the two would be separated for the first time in ten years.
Or: To pit her children against each other, Walburga prevents them from receiving each other's letters. Her plan works- but not forever.

What if Sirius hadn't been sorted into Gryffindor? What if the hat put him in Slytherin instead?
Also featuring Ravenclaw Remus
“Slytherin!” The hat shouted and Sirius felt his heart sink. The hat was pulled off his head but he didn’t move immediately, still sat on the stool. He had to have misheard. The hat couldn’t have put him in Slytherin. His gaze flicked automatically to James Potter, his newfound friend, the boy who so badly wanted to be a Gryffindor.
“Mr. Black.” Professor McGonagall said and his gaze snapped to her. Her expression softened a little and he wondered how much of what he was feeling showed on his face. “To the Slytherin table if you would.”
It took all his willpower to muster up the Black composure that had been so drilled into him. It was enough for him to keep his legs from shaking and his chin high as he crossed the hall towards his new housemates.
