Summary
“I won’t ignore this, Shou,” Hizashi’s voice is low, but it reaches him with the force of a punch.
“I’m not saying that. I’d be a terrible excuse for a hero and a mentor if I rescued him from one dungeon just to send him back into another,” his gaze trails the bandage covering a nick on Hitoshi’s forehead- the wrap around his husband’s arm. “But we have a few days, and you two need to rest. You should make the most of it while you can.”
“And you?”
Bright, slitted green eyes meet his own again. They’re glossed with the same worry that they held when Hizashi had a fist around the collar of his shirt, weakly holding him above him on the hospital bed. He’d escaped before he had the chance to explode- too full of everything he wasn’t ready to say. Too overwhelmed by the left-over flickers of a nightmare that overlaid the waking world- and too ashamed to admit how close to reality they were drawn.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about that, ‘Zashi.”
He takes his husband’s hand, still cold to the touch, and wonders if it will ever run warm again the way it used to. If he should still be allowed to be a moth drawn to the ray of sunshine beside him.

Summary
“Excuse me, sir? Can I help you?”
“My husband.” He sways on his feet, fingers gripping the reception counter. “He’s here. Shouta Aizawa-Yamada.”
The lofty space echoes with the tapping of her fingers against a keyboard. His vision blurs- the lights brighter against his eyes.
“He’s in the Intensive Care Unit, room 145.”
Hizashi moves as soon as the room number reaches his ears. “Thank you-”
“Wait a minute, sir!” Hizashi catches himself- turns back to her. “You can’t go to his room like that. He’s just recently come out of surgery.”
The woman looks him up and down, her eyes trailing from the tip of the tousled hair on his head down to his sodden boots. It isn’t until then that he notices the tickle of loose hair against his neck and dampness of sweat-soaked leather that suctions to his body. His uniform is in shambles, caked in dirt and blood. Two days of search and rescue did it no kindness.
“Geez, I-” When he takes a step back, his boot leaves a smear of brown on the shining linoleum tile.

Summary
“You don’t like the Present Mic persona, I get that. But now that you’ve pushed my buttons enough, I’m sure you’re ready to hear what kind of predicament we’re actually in.” His tone is low, something below even the usual Yamada Hizashi. He hopes it convinces Shinsou to take his words seriously. “Sit down with me. And don’t worry about anyone coming through that door, I don’t expect them to for a while, because their concern isn’t actually with us.”
The two of them sit in their usual spots, legs criss-crossed beneath them with arms crossed over one another for warmth. Hizashi watches the tremors that wrack Shinsou’s body match his own. The temperature in the room is dropping- and quick.
“Whoever did this is much more concerned with getting their hands on Eraserhead. We’re just the bait. And the fact that neither of us are tied up or muzzled tells me that we must be the least intimidating bait on the planet to them.”

Summary
"Hey...can I ask you something kind of weird?"
"Shoot," Rocky says, his voice sounding amused. "But not actually shoot."
Grace wants to laugh at the joke (he's been getting better at joking and sarcasm) but instead he swallows, his fingers tracing idle patterns on the blanket. The ache from earlier at the classroom, the beach, the constant invisible wall feels closer tonight.
"What does it feel like... to touch you?" he asks. "I mean, if we could. Your carapace. Your claws. What would it feel like to me?"
Rocky is quiet for a long beat. When he sings again, his melody is thoughtful and gentle.
"Hard. Rocky, like name. Like...strong stone that is alive. My claws are sharp but careful. My body pulses a little when I am happy. Like singing Grace can feel instead of hear." He pauses, then adds with a soft, almost shy trill, "What does human skin feel like, question? To me, I wonder."
He imagines it.
In his mind, the xenonite shell vanishes.
Or: Grace is touch starved and Rocky wants to make it better

"Grace, question?” Rocky says from his tunnel.
“Yeah?” I peek my head up, wiping nonexistent dust off my pants. The storage compartment was almost completely sterile, but I needed something to do with my hands.
“All okay, question?” There’s a slight quiver in the notes of his voice that I’ve come to recognize as hesitance.
“Of course, buddy.” I laugh disbelievingly, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Ryland finds Yao’s gun and he is perfectly normal about it, thank you very much. He’s only been stuck in the same environment eating the same meals everyday for a year now. He’s fine.

Summary
It had been a long and difficult 27 years since the Hail Mary had launched. Not as terrible as it could have been, but not easy. Humanity had survived and adapted, as it always did. There had been terrible wars. There had been incredible acts of kindness. There had been massive scientific breakthroughs. And now, there were two distant blips of Petrova-light, picked up by the Deep Space Network, hurtling home. Two probes, braking hard as they hurtled toward Earth holding the secrets to its salvation. They were late, or at least, not very early, but they were here.
Grace may have made his peace with dying to save Rocky, but Rocky insists they return to Earth.
