“What if…” Katara’s voice was barely above a whisper, and she forcibly swallowed the lump in her throat. Her mother’s face floated before her, ash falling from the corners of her eyes. “What if I don’t…” Aang’s lifeless body flashed in her mind, lightning dancing across his spine. “What if I can’t forgive him?”
Forgiveness isn't easy. (And really, who ever said it was?) This fic follows Katara's emotional journey from the events of "The Western Air Temple" to those of "The Southern Raiders," as she experiences firsthand both the challenges and rewards of forgiving others (and perhaps even learns to forgive herself along the way).

Sokka has realized that he’s basically the big brother here, and he takes his duties seriously. Protector. None of them really need to be protected, Toph being a master earthbender and Katara being a master waterbender and Aang being the Spirits damned Avatar, but he takes care of them anyway. They’re all just children of war, and Sokka refuses to let them grow in it alone.
or, Sokka learns how to take care of his friends, wins a war, kisses his girlfriend, and becomes an honorary older brother to just about everyone. Not necessarily in that order.

Does it matter to the war orphans, the war children, who have lost their families and houses and limbs to the fire of my nation’s soldiers? Does it matter to the fifteen-year-olds getting drafted for the war effort, the ones the generals of my father’s council call kindling? Does it matter to the—” Zuko cuts himself off, chest heaving, eyes burning. “Does it matter to the Air Nomads?”
The hottest day of the year comes just before the end of the world.

Katara knows she’s not being irrational. She’s being safe. She trusted Zuko once before and Aang almost died for it.
Aang almost died.
She won’t let that happen again. Just because Zuko makes them all tea now and is part of the chore rotation and took Aang to find dragons and acts all awkward and nervous and sincere doesn’t mean he won’t sell them out again the first chance he gets.

Zuko wakes up the first time it happens to the smell of burning flesh. He at first thinks it’s just a lingering memory, the vestiges of a nightmare he’s had many times, but then he hears the shouts and clanging of metal that accompanies it.
The telltale signs of a fight, right outside his door.
So of course he does the sensible thing and rushes toward the commotion without a second thought, still in his loose bedclothes and bleary-eyed from sleep. He practically falls out of the door, stumbling right into the middle of both the hall and the battle waging within it.
At this point, Zuko's no stranger to attempts on his life. He can handle it.
Or five times Zuko's friends save him from an assassination attempt, and one time they're almost too late.
