“Geoffrey,” said Bond, “Wanted the pleasure of seeing me inhale half a vodka martini.”
“He does have an impish sense of humor,” said Q. “I find it’s part of his charm.”

“We need a plan,” said Bond as they approached their destination.
“Q will be able to obscure us from Silva and his men’s view,” said M. “You’ll want to leave this to him.”
“Can he even fire a gun?” asked Bond dubiously.
“You think he designs them but never uses them?” asked M. “You have met engineers before, haven’t you?”
“He looks like a child playing with Major Boothroyd’s toys,” said Bond.
“I assure you, he’s perfectly competent,” said M. “And he’s older than he looks.”
Bond thought he heard Q snort softly over their comms but couldn’t be certain.

“M said you sold my flat,” said Bond in the same tone.
“I didn’t,” sighed Q. “I told them I leased it out. It’s more or less as you left it, I have someone in to clean once a month so it doesn’t get too dusty.”
“Why tell them anything?”
“Because in order to pass my most recent psych evaluation, I had to show progress on ‘accepting that my estranged husband was not coming back from the dead’,” said Q tightly.
Bond finally looked at Q, “The divorce wasn’t finalized,” he said.
“You were missing, presumed dead,” said Q. He continued to stare at the painting in front of them. “It was considered moot. I’ve been a widower for nearly a year while you were off working on your tan.”

“Looking good, 007.”
The compliment halts Bond in his tracks. It’s not Moneypenny’s sultry voice in his ear. Nor is it Tanner’s, with its warm, friendly professionalism.
Bond searches around the exterior of the hotel for cameras. One glints at him from above the entrance, reflecting the day’s sunlight back at him. It’s a hot summer afternoon in Dubrovnik, and he doesn’t have plans to kill anyone until at least tomorrow.
All in all, it’s a terrific day to be called good-looking, especially by his Quartermaster.

Q thought that perhaps Bond had been possessed by a vengeful spirit as he fed his cats, remarking further while he brushed his teeth that making someone work on an Excel file until 4am on a Friday night against his will would constitute a violation of the Geneva Convention.
When Q runs into problems with his least favourite software ever, Bond decides to help, albeit with unintended consequences.

There is something about Bond that puzzles Q to no end, and he wants an excuse to figure him out. He wants time and resources to fiddle with 007, the inner workings of whom look to be obscure and possibly very messy, until he’s dismantled him completely and understands what makes him tick.
Of course Bond is oblivious and also needy, but has no skill at communicating what he wants. Except with dumb little gifts. Which is infuriating.

Their listlessness is as much a product of adrenaline-starved synapses as it is a deliberate goading, bothering their peers until they’re all but begging the home office to send the irritating agent afield again.
This is the first time, however, that Q has dealt with a bored double-oh that he’s been bedding.

And with whom he shares a home, and the parenting duties of two cats.
