Nicky feels a smile slip onto his face as he takes it all in. Nicky is teaching again. He’s got a classroom that’s his in a good school; Nicky gets to make this space his own, he gets to put his passion for watching other people learn and grow somewhere, he gets to watch as student’s eyes widen when they finally understand something they’ve been stuck on. As those thoughts sink in, as Nicky lets himself realize that he’s back to doing what he loves, someone knocks on his door.
Nicky pushes himself off the wall and looks over to see who it is, only to lose all of his higher brain functions when he sees a very beautiful man standing in his doorway, wearing dark wash jeans and a blue t-shirt. He is possibly the most beautiful man Nicky has ever seen in his entire life, with his curly hair and thick beard and his arms-
“Hey, you’re Nicky, right? I ran into Quynh and she said you came in today, so I thought I would introduce myself. I’m Joe.” Joe offers Nicky his hand and Nicky takes it after he blinks a few times too many. Joe’s smile is very pretty and even more distracting. He needs to get it together, but he can’t, because Joe’s hand is so warm that Nicky misses it when Joe takes his hand back.

“What kind of consequences?” Nicky asks, trying to remember which pocket of his bag he folded his letter of resignation into this morning.
“If you do not stop, we will have to ask you to leave Holy Cross.” Cole says, and Nicky watches as Father Miller tilts his head and smiles at Nicky, and Nicky just… Nicky is not one to show his anger or frustration quickly. Nicky is usually more patient with his responses; he usually prefers to express his emotions through his actions rather than his words. But all Nicky can see is Mia’s face as she asked Nicky if he was happy, heartbroken and truly believing that she would never have a fulfilling life, like Nicky was going to break her heart whether he had answered yes or no. So, Nicky snaps.

“How many are you thinking of buying?” Nicky asks, following after Joe to the front of the store.
“It’s too early to tell, Nicky.” Joe says, deciding between a regular shopping cart with sides or a flatbed shopping cart. The cart with the sides is practical in the sense that it will support the plants better, and will probably keep Joe from buying too many because of its smaller size. He should probably pick that one. “Probably not that many, though. We still don’t know how this will work out.”
Nicky reaches across Joe and grabs the flatbed cart, giving Joe a dry look as he does so. “Get as many plants as you want. If it doesn’t work out, we will figure out what to do with them.”

It startles a real laugh out of Yusuf. "Who knows? Sometimes, Nicolò, I think I must have dreamed you entirely."
After escaping the fall of Jerusalem together, Yusuf walks away from Nicolò in order to return home and move on with his life. It works for a while. Fifteen years later, Nicolò shows up in his dreams of the two immortal women.

“Imagine,” Booker says, his voice low. “Just for a moment, that Nicky is dying.”
