In between one breath and the next, Eddie is standing in front of Buck with his hands cautiously curling around Buck's hips—while Buck was changing into a hospital gown in New Mexico, Eddie had seen the wide bruise that traveled from Buck's left hip to his right—and chases his gaze.
"Hey, there's no right or wrong answer here, you're up for lapping the car and only the car, that's what we'll do. I just… I just wanted a change of scenery. Got sick of looking at rocks and fucking desert."
OR
10 hours is a helluva long time to drive when you're in pain, and suffering from a mild concussion. Factor in having to stop every 90 minutes to make sure you're getting out and stretching to ensure there's nothing happening where they can't see... Eddie decides that the best course of action is to pull over for the night so they can shower and rest.

Ugh your dads suck, his friend Phoebe texts when he tells them where he’s gone for the summer. And – yeah. Yeah, they do. What are they even going to do while you’re there?
That’s a thing Chris usually doesn’t correct people about, the idea that he has Dads, Plural. It’s easier than talking about his dead mom, easier than answering people’s questions about why he only has Dad, Singular. People who have Mom, Singular don’t usually have to answer questions, but when it’s a dad, people get curious.
He doesn’t really get why, but he knows it’s easier to just let them assume things sometimes.
chris misses his dad. he misses his mom. he misses buck. he's still trying to figure out what it means that he misses them all in the same way.

Summary
Eddie has decided it’s time to find out what joy looks like to him.
Swearing off dating, he pours his energy into adoption papers, therapy, and late-night study hours to get certified as a paramedic.
Buck is trying to move forward too. He’s dating beautiful Camila, who seems like an ideal fit. Something about her dark hair, sharp canines, and competence as a nurse feels easy.
But between grief, tequila, and a newborn who refuses to sleep, moving forward starts to look like something else.
“Lizzie, meet Evan Phillip Buckley. We call him Buck. And Buck, meet Elizabeth Joy Diaz. We call her Lizzie.”
At the sound of her dad’s voice, Lizzie blinks, wide-eyed. Her eyes are large and still a pale shade of gray.
“Elizabeth Joy?” Buck asks.
“Yeah. She’s gonna hate it, isn’t she?”
Buck stifles a laugh. “If she has any taste.”
“So you don’t like it?”
Buck rolls his eyes, but his smile is wide and genuine, lighting up his whole face.
“I love it, Eddie. It’s perfect.” He turns his gaze back to the baby. So small, so soft. She looks impossibly fragile, yet perfectly safe and content in Eddie’s arms. “She’s perfect.”

Summary
The next one came a few weeks later, when Buck was sleeping on his couch. This one was different, much different. It had been so vivid, more so than any dream he’d ever had before, and he woke up exhausted, as if he had actually spent the night getting railed into oblivion instead of just dreaming about it.
Still, he didn’t think much of it.
It’s been months now, and it still happens.
He dreams of Buck more often than not now.
Tonight, Buck is asleep on his couch, and Eddie is dreaming in his bed.
