Summary
There are many reasons she kills Chiaki Nanami. She resisted her, and such a person walking around makes her look weak, her ideology look weak. Ideology that even now, Junko clings to. She was a threat, to both said ideology and to her operation on a whole, and too much of one to be ignored. She was the last thing holding her classmates back, and now without her, they despair. But maybe the truth is, Chiaki Nanami just pissed Junko off.
Kokichi Ouma is not like that.
For one thing, he is not beloved. He does not symbolize hope, is not seen as it. For another thing, he's nowhere near as naive as Chiaki. The moment he sees her, he is suspicious—the moment she lies, he hates. He lies, he distrusts, he poisons. Where Chiaki uplifted her classmates, he tears them down.
And yet, here Kokichi Ouma is, staring up at her defiantly and saying the same words Chiaki Nanami said.
Two sacrifices, and two classes in despair.

“Aaaaanywho,” Kokichi prattles on, turning around and taking a seat right on top of Kaito’s desk, “I guess I was just wondering why you didn’t come to me in the first place. I am the best liar you know, after all.” He looks so damn smug, Kaito has to grip his knees to keep himself from shoving him to the floor here and now.
“Gee, I wonder,” he spits through gritted teeth. “Maybe it’s ‘cause you’re a total ass? Some dipshit who won’t stop bragging about how evil he is doesn’t really sound like the kinda guy I’d wanna bring home to my folks.”
"But there’s no proof of my evil deeds to speak of! I could be lying, after all.” He leans in close, grinning like a cat who’s caught the cream. “I could lie about anything if I put my mind to it. I have quite the imagination, you know. And tons of free time. Something like this would be a cakewalk.”

Summary
This wasn’t a situation he’d ever expected to find himself in, not in a million billion years. He was a normal guy, he did normal things, he went to afterschool clubs and volunteered sometimes and definitely didn’t kill strangers in alleyways, but all the evidence pointed to him having done just that.

"... why are you on the counter?" He asked wearily.
"Dude, the floor is lava, get up here!" Kazuichi said urgently.
"... no. Cause I'm not five." Hajime went back to making coffee.
"The prize is first pick of the snacks when the supply ship comes in!"

Summary
So he doesn’t ask, and by the time they’ve run through their set like usual, Kaito’s forgotten about it almost completely.
Until Shuichi picks the journal back up, turns it over in his hands, and muses, “This is Ouma-kun’s diary.”
Blinking slowly, Kaito stares at the book Shuichi is holding. It looks no different than it had before Shuichi gave it a name, but for some reason Kaito feels differently about it now; his nerves tingle, like his arm hairs are standing up on end. He hadn’t even realised Kokichi kept a diary—it doesn’t exactly seem to be in his character. Kokichi is a secretive, elusive person. At times, during their chases, Kaito feels as though Kokichi genuinely wants to be understood—but Kaito didn’t think he would put all the answers out there where someone could just pick them up and read them.
Which begs the question.
“Okay,” says Kaito. “So why do you have it?”

Shuichi finds Kokichi's diary. Kaito doesn't think he should read it.

Summary
Kokichi’s new source of entertainment is suddenly taken away when Kaito’s eyes dart down to his pocket and he pulls out his phone. The room is quiet enough that Kokichi can hear it vibrating from where he sits all the way in the back. He can also see the way that Kaito’s expression screws up with concern, just for a moment, before it’s quickly smoothed out into a smile. He gets to his feet, phone tucked into his sleeve, and ruffles Shuichi’s hair on his way out into the hall.
The door falls shut behind him. Kokichi stares at it. Five minutes pass, then ten, then fifteen. Kokichi realises Kaito probably isn’t going to come back, but just to check he tells the teacher that he really really really has to piss, then makes a show of hopping with his legs crossed to the door just to make everyone else uncomfortable before he relaxes once out in the hall.
Yeah. No Luminaries. Kokichi frowns now that there’s nobody here to see it, scanning the hall and rubbing the side of his cheek.

Kaito ducks out in the middle of the school day, and Kokichi definitely absolutely 100% does not worry about it.

“Bad morning?” Kokichi guesses. He’s always been perceptive, but he has the added advantage of having been Kiibo’s roommate for the past three years, so Kiibo isn’t surprised that he’s able to tell.
Still, Kiibo shakes his head and rolls onto his back. “Not necessarily… I actually had a rather peaceful wakeup, though I am a bit achy this morning. I apologise if that means I won’t be able to do anything today…”
“Eh.” Kokichi flops across Kiibo’s bed as if it’s his own, stretching out a bit. Juhyo props her head between his knees, ears flattening now that he’s no longer giving her attention. Kiibo scoots closer to scratch her cheeks. “It’s okay, ‘cause I actually just finished taking over the South Pole before you woke up, so I’m totally free of plans for the rest of the day. Maybe I’ll show you more Minecraft!”

Kiibo suffers from phantom aches all over his body as a result of his death in the simulation. Some days, it's hard for him to even get out of bed, but he and Kokichi still find ways to entertain themselves.

Summary
An answer to his prayers eventually comes on a Tuesday evening in the form of a text from Kaito in their group chat. He says that he and his boyfriend are heading to dinner on Wednesday and he wanted to know if Shuichi and Maki wanted to bring their partners and make a triple date out of it. Kaito’s text is punctuated with smiley face emotes and exclamation points and captioned, You guys can finally meet him!!! and there’s pretty much absolutely no way that Shuichi was going to say no, even if he wasn’t burning to figure out the identity of Kaito’s paramour.
Unfortunately, at the time of the communication, Rantaro is on a plane crossing the Atlantic, and Maki’s girlfriend Tenko is allergic to the presence of three or more men, even if one of them is her best friend Kaito, but Ryoma and Kaede—Shuichi’s other boyfriend and Maki’s other girlfriend respectively—jump for the opportunity to spend some time with the group.
Or, well, Kaede does. Ryoma doesn’t really jump for anything.

Kaito keeps Shuichi and Maki guessing about the identity of his mysterious new boyfriend for several weeks before finally inviting them and their partners on a triple date that ends in disaster.

The warmth, the fullness, the fluttering– that's what happens to Kaito every single time, even when they argue or shout at each other. The one-hundred percent. The feeling he can neither shake nor identify.
Then, one day, Kokichi playfully blows him a kiss when they make eye-contact during an exam, and Kaito very abruptly identifies the feeling.
“Holy shit,” he mutters, and prays to be able to finish his test.
Kaito drops some hints. Kokichi is weirdly terrible at reading them.
