Flame lifts Fragger up for Lomedy to see. Its edge is sharp, serrated; long as the length of his arm and so darkly red that it’s almost black. It’s a fighter’s weapon. “I thought I wasn’t allowed to kill.”
“You’re not.” Lomedy hums. He looks Fragger over once, then nods. “Yeah, I think that’ll be good for splitting the bamboo.”

In three strides he reaches Mydei’s side, where he always belongs, and plucks the documents out of his lover’s hands before situating himself onto the young CEO’s lap. Mydei gives him an unimpressed look.

Phainon had exactly three seconds to process the bang, hiss, and gush before water exploded from the corner of his bedroom ceiling. His bed drowned, all his clothes were soaked, and everything on his desk was ruined in only a matter of seconds. By the time he’d gotten towels, the corner of his room was already too far gone.
Mydei, standing in the hallway in his pajamas, having just woken up, said the most helpful thing he could think of.
“…Huh.”
Phainon flung a soaked hoodie out of the doorway. “I think the ceiling just gave me a baptism.”
“Guess you needed it.”

Without missing a beat, Phainon leans in and places his chin gently in the offered palm, like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Like he’s some overgrown dog.
It’s funny how far Phainon has to lean down to place his face on Mydei’s palm like this.
Mydei has never had a dog, but it feels like he has an emotional support dog for when the days are rough.

Phainon closes his eyes and pictures the Blade of Fury in his mind, gold and bronze and flame, cast against the night sky like a meteor stalled in time.
“…Mydeimos. I need your help.”
He opens his eyes. For a moment, there is nothing, only the cold wind and the encroaching sound of death.
But only for a moment.
From the west, a divine light blooms, casting the billowing clouds a deep, bloody red.
Phainon sucks in a sharp breath.
Phainon has been reluctant to call upon Mydei since he'd left Okhema. It would be selfish, Phainon tells himself. When circumstance forces him to call out the name of his new god, Phainon is reminded of what he misses so dearly, but also of what he has gained.
