"It had been Shane who had suggested the weekend at the cottage. Ilya was in Montreal for a game, and they both had the first December weekend off. Ilya could always fly back to Boston from Ottawa on Sunday night - a tight schedule, but it would be worth the exhaustion.
Ilya had missed Shane. Had missed him enough to easily accept the idea of a weekend at the cottage. It would offer a welcome reprieve from the world, that felt entirely too loud and overwhelming lately. He couldn’t even exactly pinpoint what it was that made everything just a little too much."The weight of everything, past and present, is catching up on Ilya. He tries to push it down until Shane recognises a voice that is not Ilya's and realises why Ilya has been denying himself the comfort of being taken care of, and the ability to be himself. Shane sets out to change that, one soft-spoken reassurance and offer at a time, until Ilya is finally able to let go.

It’s dark, and Ilya’s not quite sure where he is.
His entire body is numb. His shoes are soaking wet from trudging lazily through the snow. His nose is running, and his lips are chapped.
Selfishly, he wishes Shane would fuss over him now. Pull him close, whisper “I forgive you” even though he shouldn’t, because Ilya would never change, because something inside him- in his family line, in his soul- was broken.
Ilya wondered how long ago it had clicked- when Shane had realized that Ilya wormed his way into this country and tricked the Hollanders into caring for him, then returned the favor by botching their language and leaving a trail of mess in his wake. He still can't help but wonder if that will be part of his punishment- being doomed to miss him in death, too.
or: Ilya’s mostly been able to cope with the fact that he’ll never be able to articulate himself fully in this country- but he’s also never been good at talking about feelings in the first place.
"I'm tired" is the best he's got. It definitely doesn't capture what's going on in his head, and Shane can't read minds.

To be honest I'm not sure how to summarise this other than saying it sort of ended up as Clarice Bean vibes if Clarice Bean was Charlie Spring. And if you don't have a clue what I'm talking about, that's fine because Clarice Bean is completely irrelevant and you actually don't even need to have heard of Lauren Child to understand the fanfiction.
So, see, I am trying to write a coherent summary when I should be sleeping and it is evidently not going well, but basically there is a breadstick swordfight and lots of angst (and I mean a LOT, British secondary schools are where we cultivate our national drinking problem) and also Nick Nelson arguing the evil capitalist-agenda of Nutella.
